64K Duke Energy Customers Without Power in the Carolinas as Tropical Storm Debby Approaches

Charlotte, N.C. – A significant number of residents are feeling the impact of Tropical Storm Debby, with more than 64,000 Duke Energy customers currently without power across the Carolinas. As of Thursday evening, Duke’s outage map indicated that the majority of these outages are concentrated in the central and eastern regions of North Carolina, particularly affecting areas near Charlotte and Raleigh.

Power Prep and Safety Tips

With the storm making its way up the east coast, Duke Energy has mobilized crews and placed linemen strategically throughout both Carolinas and the Southeastern United States in preparation for possible outages. Officials are advising residents to take precautions, such as:

  • Charging all devices to ensure connectivity
  • Having working flashlights and backup batteries handy
  • Refraining from opening refrigerators and freezers during outages to preserve food
  • Treating any downed power lines as live and dangerous

The Storm’s Impact

Debby is expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds, with speeds reaching up to 40 mph in Charlotte. Along with power outages, the storm has triggered a series of Flash Flood Warnings throughout Mecklenburg County and several neighboring areas.

Stay Informed

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the storm’s progress by monitoring local weather alerts and forecasts. Additionally, tools like real-time outage maps for power companies in North and South Carolina can be found online for those looking for specific information regarding their area.

As Tropical Storm Debby continues to affect the Carolinas, it’s crucial for community members to remain vigilant and prepared for changing conditions.
