Exciting Changes Coming to Charlotte’s Historic Johnston Building!
Charlotte, get ready for some new developments that could bring a buzz of excitement to our vibrant city! The historic Johnston Building, a landmark that many of us have passed by countless times on South Tryon Street, is gearing up for a transformation unlike anything we’ve seen in a while. Buckle up, because this is not just a renovation; it’s a full-blown conversion into a sleek hotel named The Beckworth Hotel!
From Office Building to Stylish Hotel
For over a hundred years, the Johnston Building has stood tall in uptown Charlotte. You may remember it as a traditional office space, but times are changing! Thanks to the efforts of KHP Capital Partners, based out of San Francisco, this iconic 100-year-old structure will soon feature 245 luxurious hotel rooms. How cool is that?
So here’s the scoop: the plans were laid out clearly during the meeting held by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmark Commission. The proposal highlights the conversion of the 17-story building, which spans an impressive 172,300 square feet. Along with the hotel rooms, guests can look forward to a ground-floor restaurant and a cozy coffee shop. Need to host a meeting? There will be a 10,000-square-foot meeting room plus a 3,500-square-foot ballroom for events! Oh, and let’s not forget the rooftop bar that will surely become the go-to spot for breathtaking views of the city skyline.
Keeping History Intact
Now, it’s worth mentioning that because the Johnston Building has been recognized as a historic landmark since 1992, KHP had to jump through some hoops. They needed approval from the Historic Landmark Commission before moving ahead with any significant changes—and guess what? They got it! The commission met earlier this month and approved this exciting plan. This allows KHP to push forward with the renovations, although they might have to seek additional approvals down the line.
Planning for the Future
While the total cost of the project hasn’t been disclosed, KHP does plan to make the most of any tax credits available due to the building’s historic status, which could help in financing the project. Additionally, KHP has already been proactive by filing for permits related to the interior demolition and the land development construction plan. Things are definitely moving fast!
Looking ahead, we can expect the revamped property to be ready by the summer of 2026. Imagine checking into a chic hotel right in the heart of uptown Charlotte, with all the modern conveniences while still being able to admire the charm and history of this iconic building.
The Cool Design Team
The design and architectural finesse behind this project will be handled by some talented folks! Charlotte-based Gensler is bringing their architectural prowess to the table, while Brooklyn-based Workstead will handle interior design. With such a stellar team in place, we can expect The Beckworth Hotel to be a stunning addition to the Charlotte skyline.
A Glimpse into Charlotte’s Future
The Johnston Building has seen a lot throughout its century in existence— from being the tallest building in Charlotte when it opened in 1924 to a classic office space and now the exciting transformation into a hotel. The Beckworth Hotel may just become a beloved destination for both locals and visitors alike.
So, Charlotte, let’s keep our eyes peeled for what’s next! Who knows? This could just be the start of a wave of refreshing changes in our beautiful city!
