Wesley Chapel's New Publix Store Set to Boost Grocery Competition in Charlotte Area

Wesley Chapel Welcomes New Publix Store as Grocery Competition Heats Up

Hey there, Wesley Chapel! Exciting news is on the horizon for local grocery shoppers because Publix Super Market is gearing up to open its third store right here in Union County. That’s right! On the southeast corner of Weddington and Waxhaw Indian Trail roads, this grocery giant is set to add a 50,325-square-foot store to its impressive lineup.

What to Expect from the New Store

While we don’t have a set date just yet for the grand opening, Publix has a workforce in its sights. This new location is expected to hire approximately 150 full- and part-time employees, providing a boost to local employment. If you’re on the hunt for a job or just love the idea of working in a friendly grocery environment, this could be your chance!

For those familiar with the area, you’ll find this new store at the Village Commons shopping center, which is conveniently situated less than 6 miles east from the existing Publix at Marvin Gardens in Waxhaw and about 5 miles southwest of the Monroe store at Market at Shoppes at Hanfield Village. Talk about convenient grocery shopping options!

A Look at Market Competition in Charlotte

Now, you might be wondering why the excitement over another Publix? Well, the grocery game in Charlotte is heating up, with an impressive $10.2 billion in competition according to sales tracking experts. The region now boasts 745 grocery stores, a jump from 722 in 2020! Publix established its presence in North Carolina with its first store in Ballantyne back in early 2014, and it’s now holding strong at fourth place in market share, trailing behind some pretty big names like Walmart and Harris Teeter. But Publix is not done yet, with plans to sprinkle more stores across the market!

What’s Coming Next for Publix?

Besides the new location in Wesley Chapel, Publix has several more stores on the drawing board in the Charlotte area. Here’s a sneak peek:

  • A 55,000-square-foot store with a drive-thru at 11525 Carmel Commons is anticipated to open next year.
  • Construction is underway at the Arboretum store located at the crossroads of Providence and Pineville-Matthews roads.
  • A 28,000-square-foot store is also being planned for the 10 Tryon building at the corner of Tryon and Ninth streets in Uptown, with more details coming soon.
  • Clear Creek Crossings will bring additional Publix locations at the corner of Albemarle and Rocky River Church roads – stay tuned for updates!
  • And wait for it – a huge 68,000-square-foot store will also be opening in South Park at Sharon and Colony roads.

Get Ready for More Food Options

But it’s not just Publix making waves in the grocery scene! Several other grocery options are gearing up to join the competition in Charlotte:

  • Sprouts Farmers Market will debut a 21,000-square-foot store next summer at the One NoDa Park development on 36th and Tryon streets. This will mark their third location in the area.
  • Matthews Board of Commissioners recently gave the green light to a grocery store plan rumored to have a similar vibe to Trader Joe’s.
  • California-based Spangler’s is moving forward with its 8,000-square-foot store just north of Uptown.
  • Wegmans is also making headlines, planning to open a 110,000-square-foot store in Ballantyne by 2026.
  • And let’s not forget, Charlotte will soon see its very first cooperative grocery store, Three Sisters Market, in a neighborhood without a traditional supermarket for over 30 years.

With all these new grocery stores on the horizon, Wesley Chapel and the greater Charlotte area are set for a fantastic food shopping adventure. Whether you’re a fan of spicy chicken subs or fresh produce, get ready! The days of grocery shopping are about to get a lot more exciting.
