Government

Mecklenburg County, North Carolina

Charlotte has had a “council-manager” system of government since 1929, with elected politicians and an appointed city manager sharing responsibilities.

Every two years, the mayor and 11 council members are elected by the citizens. The mayor and four council members are chosen at large by citywide voting, while the remaining seven council members are elected by district voters. Maps and further information about the districts

The “board of directors” of this municipal company are the mayor and the city council. They determine policy, authorize the funding of all City activities, and make ordinances, resolutions, and orders in this capacity. Appointing the city manager, city attorney, city clerk, and members of different boards and commissions are among their tasks.

The city manager, who also serves as the chief operating officer, is responsible for carrying out the policies and decisions of the city council as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of the municipal government. It is the job of the city manager to ensure that all City services are delivered in a timely and cost-effective way, as well as to give vision and leadership to the City organization.
