CMS Five-Year Plan Concludes with Mixed Results

The five-year strategic plan for academic improvement in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is coming to a close, and the final data is expected to show disappointing results. Despite the district’s efforts, interim reports suggest that CMS is likely to fall short of its targets for third-grade reading scores for Black and Latino students, Math I scores for high school students, and the percentage of 2024 graduates earning college and career readiness credentials.

Recognition for Outstanding Student Achievements

During a recent school board meeting, Superintendent Crystal Hill and the CMS board took the time to honor students who have excelled academically and shown remarkable growth. Students like Nevaeh Blakely, a sixth-grader at Francis Bradley Middle School, and Kaden Richards, a fourth-grader at Palisades Park Elementary, were commended for their achievements in language arts and math.

Parents of the recognized students expressed pride in their children’s dedication to their studies and noted the importance of supportive teachers and stable learning environments in their academic success.

Looking Towards the Future

Superintendent Crystal Hill acknowledged the challenges faced by CMS during the implementation of the current five-year plan, which coincided with periods of leadership turnover and the disruptions caused by the global pandemic. Hill emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences and announced plans to develop a new strategic plan that will guide CMS into 2029.

While the turnover in leadership at CMS has been a historical challenge, Hill and the board are hopeful that they can create stability at the top, retain excellent teachers, and provide the necessary support for all students to thrive academically in the years to come.

Conclusion

As CMS reflects on the conclusion of its current five-year plan, there is a sense of disappointment over unmet targets but also hope for the future. By recognizing and celebrating student achievements, addressing challenges, and planning strategically, CMS aims to set a course for continued academic improvement and success.
