Charlotte Show Tackles Housing Issues with a Unique Stage Experience

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The ongoing challenges of the housing market are taking center stage in Charlotte with a new live production, *Kudzu: A Story of Belonging*. This innovative show is designed to raise awareness about the struggles many families face in securing affordable housing, using a blend of theater, music, and immersive storytelling.

The Reality of Housing Costs

A recent report on the state of the nation’s housing highlights that both homeowners and renters are grappling with escalating housing costs across the U.S. In North Carolina, statistics reveal that while the proportion of cost-burdened households is slightly better than the national average, many still find themselves caught between rent and other essential expenses, like food.

An Immersive Experience

This theatrical endeavor is the brainchild of Mixed Metaphors Productions, in partnership with the nonprofit QC Family Tree. The goal is to take audiences on a unique “open house” tour, allowing them to explore a home in Enderly Park while engaging with the storyline. Artistic director Kat Martin emphasizes the immersive nature of the production: “You’re going to be dropped right into the story.”

Exploring Change in Charlotte

Martin, a Charlotte native, has witnessed firsthand the evolving landscape of her city. “This show spotlights how the housing market in Charlotte has changed in ways that can hurt long-time residents,” she says. The production dives deep into themes of speculating property sales and the broader question of who truly belongs in the city.

Voices from the Cast

Among the cast is Cecilia McNeill, who also hails from Charlotte. She reflects on the challenges many face in trying to achieve homeownership. “It’s really hard,” McNeill admits, while expressing hope that the production will encourage attendees to recognize the changes in their community. “Take time to see what you can do to make a change,” she urges.
