Exciting News for Charlotte: $3.15 Million Grant for Road Safety!
Hey, Charlotte! We’ve got some fantastic news to share with you! The Biden-Harris Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation have granted our city $3.15 million to help improve road safety. That’s right—this big chunk of change is all thanks to Rep. Alma S. Adams, who made the announcement earlier this week.
What’s the Plan?
This funding will support the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) through a project named Safety is Everyone’s Business. The goal? To tackle roadway deaths and serious injuries head-on. With a record of 117 fatalities from car accidents in Mecklenburg County this past year, and while it’s a slight improvement from last year’s 139, we can’t rest on our laurels. This money is crucial for making our roads safer for everyone.
The CRTPO plans to use this funding to develop a comprehensive Safety Action Plan across our three-county area, which includes Iredell, Mecklenburg, and Union counties. With this plan, authorities will be able to pinpoint the most dangerous spots on our roads—those areas that need immediate traffic safety enhancements. The plan will create a High Injury Network that highlights these high-priority corridors and intersections. Sounds great, right?
Why Is This Important for Charlotte?

Just a month prior, the CRTPO snagged an additional $5 million through the Department of Transportation’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant. This funding is dedicated to examining transportation issues within areas historically marginalized, along with focusing on communities facing persistent poverty. This comprehensive look into our transportation challenges is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.
