Charlotte, N.C. – A possible tornado surprised residents of Charlotte early Thursday morning when a funnel cloud was spotted in the Steele Creek division. Local resident Jacob Sprankle caught this moment on camera and shared the eye-catching video online. It didn’t take long for the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg to chime in, asking Sprankle about any damage from the storm. Thankfully, he responded, saying, “Nothing noted so far.” It sounds like Charlotte dodged a bullet this time!

But hold on, the potential tornado isn’t the only thing that’s got folks buzzing. Just hours after the funnel cloud showed up, Hurricane Helene was gearing up to make landfall in Florida before making its way northward and potentially affecting the Carolinas. So, while things might seem calm for now, it’s essential to keep an eye on the weather as the storm’s impact begins to unfold.
What to Expect from Hurricane Helene
With Hurricane Helene nearing, the forecast is already indicating a significant amount of rain. We could see rainfall totals climbing anywhere from six to twelve inches in the mountainous and foothill areas, and that doesn’t even factor in the rain that has already fallen before Helene arrived. This has led to an elevated risk of flooding, with a flood watch currently in effect for the region. It seems like a little Mother Nature is throwing a party, and the rain is her plus-one!

For residents in the Charlotte Metro area, the expectation is a bit more reasonable, with projected totals of two to four inches. As if the rain isn’t enough, the winds will be kicking up as well! Gusts could reach as much as 50 mph in areas along and west of Interstate 77.
