Charlotte’s Journey Toward Economic Mobility: A Community Rising Together

Charlotte, North Carolina has been on a remarkable journey over the past several years. Back in 2014, a significant study by Dr. Raj Chetty from Harvard University raised eyebrows when it revealed that our city ranked last among 50 major U.S. cities in terms of economic mobility. This troubling statistic highlighted the difficulty faced by children from low-income families trying to rise up the income ladder. But just as Charlotteans are known for their passion and drive, they turned this alarming situation into an opportunity for change.

A Call to Action

Upon recognizing the pressing nature of this issue, local government leaders, nonprofits, and businesses didn’t just sit back. They rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Fast forward to today, and we find that Charlotte-Mecklenburg has made significant strides, climbing up to the 38th position in economic mobility among those same 50 cities. Even better, we’re ranked 3rd in terms of economic mobility progress—moving up the ladder faster than many of our peers. Isn’t that something to feel good about?

Leading on Opportunity: A Unified Approach

One of the most vital initiatives contributing to this positive change is the formation of Leading on Opportunity (LOO) in 2017, a collaborative initiative of the Foundation For The Carolinas. Its primary goal? To align and amplify the work happening around economic mobility throughout our community. Before LOO came into existence, many organizations were tackling the mobility issue, but there was a lack of coordination. Now, LOO provides data, policy and strategy support to various stakeholders, helping to enhance their impact and effectiveness.

Notably, public-private partnerships have played a crucial role in this endeavor. Companies like Deloitte have stepped up to supply resources and expertise to tackle the complex challenges surrounding economic disparity. The initiative focuses on several key areas, such as early care and education, child and family stability, and college and career readiness, as well as understanding the implications of segregation and social capital.

The Opportunity Compass

One of the standout projects from LOO is the development of the Opportunity Compass. Launched in 2022, this data visualization tool helps local nonprofits and funders grasp a clearer picture of where economic mobility stands across Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Utilizing advanced technology, the compass analyzes critical data from 33 key indicators, providing organizations with a better understanding of their current conditions.

Since its inception, the Opportunity Compass has laid the groundwork for more than 100 workshops with local nonprofits. These organizations can now leverage the insights gathered to inform and adapt their strategies, ensuring they are as effective as possible in fostering economic mobility.

Looking Ahead

Even with the impressive progress we’ve seen, both LOO and Deloitte know that the work is far from over. They’re currently collaborating to introduce Opportunity Compass 2.0, which will facilitate real-time data analysis. This upgrade will allow community leaders and decision-makers to respond swiftly to economic shifts, ensuring that change can happen proactively rather than reactively. The goal is clear: we shouldn’t have to wait another ten years to evaluate the impact of our initiatives.

Community Collaboration is Key

The journey toward improving economic mobility in Charlotte serves as a shining example of what can be accomplished when nonprofits and businesses come together with a shared purpose. It’s essential that everyone, from policymakers to local business leaders, rallies around a common set of data to coordinate their efforts effectively.

We invite the broader business community to get involved and support our amazing local nonprofits, all of which are devoted to enhancing the lives of Charlotte residents. By backing these initiatives, businesses contribute not just to social equity but also fortify our local economy, making it stronger and more resilient.

In conclusion, Charlotte is on the rise, and together, we can ensure that our city continues to head in the right direction towards economic mobility for all.
