Community Unites to Aid Recovery Efforts Following Devastating Flood in Charlotte

Charlotte, N.C. – Community Come Together for Recovery in the Wake of Devastation

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, two major organizations from the Charlotte area are joining forces to aid recovery efforts following the destruction caused by the recent flood. Lowe’s and Samaritan’s Purse are mobilizing hundreds of volunteers this week to pitch in and help homeowners across the mountainous regions affected by the storm.

Sean Reilly, the Regional Vice President for Lowe’s Carolina stores, is among a large group of dedicated Lowe’s employees who are rolling up their sleeves and working side-by-side with Samaritan’s Purse volunteers from all corners of the country. Together, they’re diligently focusing on helping homeowners begin the daunting task of cleaning up. “Really just mass devastation everywhere,” Reilly remarked as his team tackled the aftermath in the Asheville area. Volunteers are not just lifting spirits; they’re also lifting debris, as one group worked tirelessly to rip out insulation from a house that suffered severe water damage during the flood.

Witnessing Nature’s Fury

It’s difficult to comprehend the sheer power of nature until you’re faced with it firsthand. Clark Schneemann, a volunteer with Samaritan’s Purse, expressed his amazement: “It’s amazing the power of nature, driving along the river, seeing all the debris, and the force it leaves you speechless.” The scope of destruction can be overwhelming, and yet it has ignited a fire within many to roll up their sleeves and get to work.

“It’s very hands-on work,” Reilly explained. “Tyvek suits, pulling out insulation, drywall—anything that needs to be done so we can help get these people back into their homes as soon as possible.” The commitment to helping others is palpable in the air, and for many volunteers, it is a fulfilling experience to lend their hands in these challenging times.

A Homeowner’s Heartfelt Gratitude

One homeowner, Maria Salgado, shared her heartbreak and gratitude amid the crisis. “I don’t have any words to describe what’s happening. [We were] living in this house for 18 years, and we lost everything, everything is gone.” Despite the overwhelming loss, Salgado is incredibly thankful for all the support: “So grateful to see people that we don’t even know helping us.” The volunteers are working hard to salvage whatever they can from her home, ensuring that she has the chance to rebuild her life.

Signs of Hope Amidst the Chaos

In the midst of destruction, a little spark of hope emerged when volunteers rescued an adorable tiny kitten while clearing out debris. “We were pulling insulation out from underneath the home and a kitten piled out,” Schneemann recounted with a smile. “It feels good; it’s life in the midst of destruction—a reminder that there’s always life and there’s always hope.”

Join the Effort!

If you’re feeling inspired to contribute to these recovery efforts, there’s good news! Volunteers are needed throughout the week and everyone from the community is invited to step in and help out. “We’ll give you the tools and instructions, everything you need,” says Reilly, extending a warm invitation. It’s an incredible opportunity for anyone wishing to lend a helping hand.
