Huntersville Prepares for $30.8 Million Diverging Diamond Interchange at I-77 Gilead Road Exit

Huntersville Set for Major Changes at I-77 Gilead Road Exit!

Hey there, Huntersville residents! Get ready to brace yourselves for some traffic changes this weekend as big plans are rolling into town. Starting Thursday night and continuing through the weekend, the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will kick off work on a new $30.8 million diverging diamond interchange at the Gilead Road exit 23 on Interstate 77.

What’s Happening?

You might be wondering what exactly a diverging diamond interchange is. Well, don’t worry; you’re not alone! This innovative traffic layout is designed to improve the flow of traffic while boosting safety. Here in Huntersville, the goal is to reduce the number of accidents at this busy interchange that has served the area for decades. It’s similar to the design already in place at I-77 exit 28 in nearby Cornelius, so let’s hope it works its magic here as well!

Expect Some Changes!

Starting at 9 p.m. on Thursday, left turns will no longer be allowed on U.S. 21 at Gilead Road. But fear not, folks! If you’re looking to turn left, you’ll be directed to a new permanent U-turn lane to help you flip your direction safely. This might take a little bit of getting used to, but it’s all part of the plan.

Then, fast forward to 9 p.m. on Friday, and things are about to get a bit more complicated. Gilead Road will be completely closed between Reese Boulevard and U.S. 21. This closure will allow the work crews to finish placing all the necessary stripes, lane markings, and markers that will reflect the new diverging diamond layout.

During this period, drivers will need to take a detour to I-77. So prepare yourself for a little extra time on the road, especially if you’re heading in that direction!

When Can We Expect Normalcy?

Don’t worry; you won’t be stuck in traffic forever! The road is scheduled to reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday with the new traffic pattern in place. The NCDOT has stated that drivers should allow some time to adjust to these changes, so keep your eyes peeled for the new layout during your morning commute next week!

Why the Change?

You might be curious about why this change is necessary. According to highway officials, diverging diamonds are a great way to help traffic flow better. Instead of stacking up at traffic lights where exit ramps meet the main road, this design allows for smoother transitions and helps reduce congestion. Drivers will still encounter traffic lights, but they’ll be placed in a way that minimizes stoppages.

There are similar diverging diamond configurations nearby, including at the I-485 Mallard Creek Road and I-85 Poplar Tent Road exits. If those changes are any indication of how well this design works, it looks like we’re in for an efficient upgrade!

Stay Updated!

So, dear residents, mark your calendars, plan your routes, and maybe allow a little extra time in your schedules until everyone gets the hang of this new setup. Change is on the horizon at the Gilead Road exit, and with it comes the hope for a smoother, safer drive for all. Happy travels, and we’ll see you on the road!
