CHARLOTTE — After years of hard work and planning, a brand new chapter is unfolding in east Charlotte with the opening of a key part of the Eastland Yards development. This milestone is particularly exciting as it marks the beginning of efforts to create affordable housing for those aged 55 and older in the community. And let’s be honest, this is a big deal!
On a bright Wednesday morning, Evoke Living celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony, signaling the end of a long wait filled with unexpected setbacks. The journey to this point has been anything but smooth, facing hurdles thrown by factors like COVID-19, supply chain headaches, rising inflation, and even a major drop out from Tepper Sports and Entertainment regarding the site’s plans. The project was first announced back in 2018, but challenges have unfortunately elongated the timeline.
Tim Sittema, who is the managing partner of Crosland Southeast, shared a candid reflection on the journey leading up to this point. “This has been an incredibly difficult time these last few years to be doing a development, especially affordable housing,” he noted. It’s a true testament to resilience and dedication in the face of adversity.
These bumps in the road prompted the city’s Economic Development Committee to intervene, approving an extra $11 million in funding back in September, adding to the original investment of $30 million. Councilman Malcolm Graham emphasized that this additional cash is mostly aimed at tackling inflation costs affecting the project. “Here we stand today, and I think it’s a testimony to the will and the power of the citizens to be patient,” he stated, acknowledging the commitment shown by the community and the city of Charlotte throughout the process.
The mission behind Evoke Living’s efforts is clear: they aim to fill the gap for affordable housing for those in need. Their newly open one-bedroom units are slated for individuals over the age of 55 earning around $600 a month. This is not just a step forward for the development; it’s a ray of hope for many residents seeking a reliable home.
But wait, there’s more! The plans for Eastland Yards extend far beyond affordable housing. Developers are gearing up to break ground on a variety of projects in the coming year, including townhomes, single-family homes, and even a county park. Additionally, there are visions for retail spaces and a sports complex, promising a vibrant community hub that caters to both residents and visitors alike.
As news of the Eastland Yards redevelopment spreads, local residents have shared their excitement and eagerness for the new changes. After all, revitalizing this area not only enhances the neighborhood but also provides important resources for so many. With rising costs being a pressing concern, this development brings a much-needed balance.
With these initiatives taking shape and support from both the residents and the city, the future indeed looks bright for affordable housing and community development in Charlotte. So here’s to new beginnings at Eastland Yards—let the transformation begin!
