Community members participating in the healing art initiative in Charlotte.
Novant Health launches the ‘Art of Remarkable Care’ initiative in Charlotte to integrate local artists and patients, fostering healing through artistic expression. The program aims to create connection and joy, proving the therapeutic benefits of art, especially for cancer patients. Notably, artist Shefalee Patel shares her journey of recovery intertwined with creativity. With plans to implement art therapy and community events, the initiative reflects Novant’s commitment to holistic well-being, continuing its support for the arts in the community.
In the vibrant city of Charlotte, a new wave of creativity is washing over the community as Novant Health introduces an exciting initiative aimed at supporting the well-being of patients through the power of art. Set to be unveiled this Wednesday, the “Art of Remarkable Care” initiative promises to bring local artists together with patients, employees, caregivers, and community members, creating a colorful tapestry of support and healing.
Among the passionate artists involved is Shefalee Patel, a talented creator whose work reflects her rich Indian heritage. She’s not only dedicated to dance and painting but has also found a profound connection between art and healing during her own battle with cancer. After being diagnosed with uterine lining cancer in 2022 and undergoing a hysterectomy, Patel discovered that art played a crucial role in her recovery, serving as a form of medicine that provided both comfort and joy.
Patel equates the act of creating art to a spiritual practice, likening it to praying. She beautifully describes the calmness she finds when painting, and she shares that she has even utilized acupuncture to manage hot flashes during her healing journey. Her story is just one of many that exemplify how art can serve as a vessel for healing during life’s toughest challenges.
Novant Health’s initiative isn’t just about showcasing beautiful pieces of art; it’s about creating those transformational moments of joy and connection during difficult times. Dr. Sid Fletcher, a prominent figure at Novant Health, has emphasized how powerful and healing art can be. When patients face challenges like fear, isolation, and the uncertainty that often accompanies a cancer diagnosis, engaging with art can provide a source of solace and understanding.
Research suggests that experiencing art can not only ease chronic pain but also decrease stress and anxiety levels. In fact, studies have shown that exposure to music can positively influence patients’ immune responses, supporting the notion that art plays a vital role in overall health and well-being.
The “Art of Remarkable Care” initiative will include a variety of programs such as art therapy, collaboration on murals, and community events facilitated by Charlotte is Creative. With the intention to roll out these initiatives in Mecklenburg and Rowan counties, Novant Health is committed to fostering this artistic community collaboration.
Despite the costs of the initiative remaining under wraps, the enthusiastic local artists and healthcare providers involved are eager to witness the impact this program will have on those in need. Dr. Jeff Hardin, who leads the integrative medicine team, will be pivotal in connecting patients with therapists and artists throughout this journey.
Novant Health has a long-standing history of supporting the arts in Charlotte. The health system has contributed to iconic local venues such as the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture, and has collaborated with the Charlotte Ballet on healthcare services. Additionally, the recent renovation and reopening of the Carolina Theatre, which boasts a rich history since it first opened its doors in 1927, adds to the city’s cultural vibrancy. After nearly half a century of closure, this historic venue is again welcoming the community.
To further uplift spirits, Patel will be donating her artwork titled “Branching Out Into Good Vibes” to the Ballantyne center. Her heartfelt hope is that this creation will inspire positivity among visitors and patients alike, truly embodying the spirit of this initiative.
As the second-largest healthcare provider in Charlotte, with more than 900 locations including hospitals and clinics, Novant Health continues to foster a deep-rooted relationship with the community, focusing on not just medical care but also on uplifting the human spirit through the transformative power of art.
