In the vibrant city of Charlotte, something extraordinary is happening: a story of resilience, love, and pure joy unfolds around a little girl named Dallas “Dally” Watts. Born on December 23, 2023, just in time for Christmas, Dally was a precious gift to her parents, Madalyn and Cameron, and her older brother, Kolton. But her first months were anything but ordinary.
Imagine being a new parent, blissfully in love with your baby girl, only for a routine moment to turn into a nightmare. At just six weeks old, Dally was diagnosed with heart failure, completely changing her family’s world. After noticing her baby girl was breathing rapidly, Madalyn and Cameron rushed Dally to the emergency room, where doctors delivered the heartbreaking news: her heart was enlarged and she needed a heart transplant to survive.
Fortunately for Dally, Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital has a top-notch pediatric heart team that didn’t miss a beat. Ranked among the top 10 Children’s Hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery in the nation, this facility became Dally’s second home, where she received the life-saving care she desperately needed.
Her journey was tough. Dally had to endure a whirlwind of procedures, including a vital VAD (ventricular assist device) surgery that would keep her alive while waiting for a heart transplant. “Cameron and I quickly matured in the hospital; it was a crash course in parenting,” reflects Madalyn. “We knew we had to make every moment count.”
Dally faced numerous challenges during her stay. Her heart stopped twice in the cardiac catheterization lab, forcing her to be placed on a ventilator for several days. Yet, her spirit shone through, and as she began to recover, she embraced life again. Despite having to fight off complications like seizures and diabetes insipidus, Dally’s silly personality started to burst forth. Madalyn describes her daughter, now almost a year old, as a “spicy little girl with a teenager’s personality.”
“She’s very opinionated and likes things done her way,” Madalyn laughs. “But she’s incredibly cuddly when she wants to be!”
Finally, after 150 long days, the moment Dally and her family had been praying for arrived. On July 17, four months after her VAD surgery, the transplant team entered Dally’s hospital room with life-changing news: “Would it make it better if I told you we have a heart?” Madalyn still remembers the haze of disbelief and joy that washed over her in those precious moments. The next day, Dally received her new heart.
A month later, Madalyn and Cameron had the unforgettable experience of bringing their baby girl home. “Life has been amazing and hectic, but a good chaotic—there’s no place we’d rather be,” says Madalyn. With Dally nearing her first birthday, she’s doing well but has a journey ahead. Currently, she still depends on a gastrostomy tube (G-tube) for feeding and takes various medications, but her family remains hopeful.
As they look back at the days spent in the hospital, Madalyn and Cameron reflect fondly on the connections made with the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at Levine Children’s. “They became like family to us,” shares Madalyn. “I trust them with my kids’ lives.”
What’s next for Dally? Her parents are focused on goals like reducing her medications and, hopefully, seeing her eat independently one day. Madalyn dreams of Dally using her experiences to inspire others in the field of pediatric cardiac care—a career that could bring comfort to young heart warriors who face challenges similar to her own.
Above all, Madalyn emphasizes the simple yet profound lesson her family has learned through this journey: “Life is too short not to be kind.” As Dally continues to thrive against all odds, her story is not just a testament to the power of medical care but also the unbreakable bonds of love that make every challenge worth fighting.
