A police chase in Belmont culminated in a dramatic crash.
A high-speed chase erupted in Belmont, N.C. after Travis Eugene Cuthbertson stole over $2,300 worth of perfumes from a Walgreens. The chase ended in a crash, and Cuthbertson was apprehended with multiple charges against him, shocking local residents who witnessed the chaotic events unfold.
In a rather startling turn of events, the small city of Belmont, N.C. found itself at the center of a dramatic high-speed chase on April 2, 2025. A 35-year-old man named Travis Eugene Cuthbertson allegedly made headlines for all the wrong reasons after stealing an impressive $2,356 worth of perfumes and colognes from a local Walgreens.
The incident unfolded around 11:45 a.m. when Cuthbertson reportedly shattered a glass display case within the store to access the coveted fragrances. It seems the allure of luxury scents proved too irresistible for him, prompting a decision that would eventually lead to chaos!
After making off with his fragrant booty, Cuthbertson jumped into his 2017 Chevrolet Equinox and sped away from the scene of the crime. However, things took a wild turn when he decided to ram his vehicle into a Belmont police officer’s car. This reckless move quickly set off a thrilling police chase that would see them racing through the city and into Charlotte!
The police pursuit finally came to a screeching halt at the intersection of Old Pineville Road and Archdale Drive. In a dramatic twist of fate, Cuthbertson crashed his Equinox into two other vehicles, creating some mayhem on the roads. Despite the chaos, there were thankfully no reported injuries to officers or civilians involved in the chase.
After flipping his car, Cuthbertson attempted to flee on foot in a desperate bid for freedom. But his escape plan was short-lived as authorities quickly apprehended him. Perhaps not the best decision-making on his part!
Once in custody, Cuthbertson complained of pain in his right shoulder and was transported to Atrium Health CMC Main Hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, he had no visible injuries. However, a background check revealed that he was already wanted in the National Crime Information Center database for multiple charges! These included felony conspiracy, felony flee to elude, and a probation violation from Mecklenburg County.
Residents of Belmont reacted with disbelief to the incident, expressing concerns about safety and the dangers that police chases bring to their normally peaceful neighborhoods. A wave of concern washed over the community as they witnessed the events unfold, indicating that though the thief may have been looking for a quick score, his actions sent shockwaves through the calm streets of Belmont.
After being evaluated and treated at the hospital, Cuthbertson was set to be transported to the Gaston County Jail. He now faces multiple charges, not just for theft, but also for the chaotic and dangerous chase he led police on. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unexpected and sometimes wild occurrences that can shake up a quiet town.
As the dust settles and residents sigh in relief, they’re left looking forward to a return to their typical, tranquil lives, hoping that events like this remain a rarity rather than the norm.
