Charlotte, N.C.– In observation of National Black Maternal Health Week, the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement is shining a spotlight on the importance of maternal health. According to recent statistics, cardiovascular disease stands as the leading cause of maternal death in the United States, underlining the critical need for increased awareness and support for expectant mothers, especially within the Black community.

Real Women Advocates

The National spokesperson for Go Red for Women’s 2023 Class of Real Women, Leslie Jordan, has joined efforts to raise awareness for cardiovascular disease during National Black Maternal Health Week. Advocates like Jordan are crucial in educating the public and empowering women to prioritize their heart health before, during, and after pregnancy.

Addressing Disparities

Black women continue to face significant disparities in maternal health outcomes, with higher rates of pregnancy-related complications and mortality compared to their white counterparts.
