Charlotte, North Carolina—This week, some of the most talented musicians, industry experts, and fans will converge in the Queen City for Confluence, a much-anticipated conference and festival aimed at shaping the future of the music industry. Among the speakers set to share their journey is none other than Brent Faiyaz, a Grammy-nominated singer who has captured hearts around the world.
Brent Faiyaz, whose real name is Christopher Brent Wood, has come a long way since he first started crafting beats in his family’s basement. His mother, Jeanette Wood, recalls her initial skepticism turning into pride as she witnessed her son’s transformation from a young artist into a global sensation. “Brent was always inclined toward the arts. He started sketching at age five and had this natural talent,” Jeanette said. “But when he graduated high school and said he wanted to pursue music instead of college, we were worried.”
Understanding the importance of following one’s passion, Jeanette and her husband—both educators—struck a deal with Brent. He was allowed to chase his musical dreams for one year. If he didn’t achieve anything significant, he would have to reconsider college. “We knew that college isn’t going anywhere,” she explained, “but we wanted him to give it a fair shot.”
During that pivotal year, Brent juggled two jobs at a local Harris Teeter and Dunkin Donuts while working on his music in the evenings. “He was determined; music was his only plan. There was no back-up,” Jeanette reminisced. He turned a room in their home into a makeshift studio and began to share his creations on Spotify and other platforms. Against all odds, he stayed committed to his dream.
Fast forward a decade, and Jeanette is bursting with pride as she reflects on Brent’s journey. “Seeing him perform on stage, especially in countries where people don’t speak our language but know every word to his songs—it’s unbelievable.” She has taken on a more formal role in her son’s career, balancing her responsibilities as both a mother and a business associate. While challenging, she finds joy in his success and values their relationship. “Working with him has its challenges, but he remains humble and grounded,” she shared.
With fame comes challenges, and Jeanette acknowledges that it’s essential for people to understand who Brent is outside of the music. “He has the same friends and values. People often jump to conclusions about him because of his music, but he’s still my son,” she emphasized.
For other parents supporting a child who wishes to pursue a creative path, Jeanette offers invaluable advice: “Don’t dismiss their dreams. Encourage them. College will always be there, but these creative talents might not last forever.”
As Brent prepares to share his journey at Confluence on October 10th, attendees can look forward to hearing candid stories about his success, challenges, and the importance of following one’s passion. The event takes place from October 9th to 11th at the AvidXchange Music Factory in Charlotte, making it a fantastic opportunity for aspiring musicians and fans alike.
Looking back, Jeanette feels grateful that she and her husband chose to believe in Brent’s vision, even when they didn’t completely understand it. “This journey has been surreal, and I wouldn’t change a thing,” she said. As they look to the future, the Wood family continues to inspire those around them, proving that dreams can indeed come true with hard work and a supportive family.
While the world watches what’s next for Brent Faiyaz, one thing remains clear: he is not just a rising star; he is a testament to the power of believing in oneself—and the priceless support of a loving family.
