Buffalo High School Set to Bring “Charlotte’s Web” to Life This December

Buffalo High School to Present “Charlotte’s Web” This December

Buffalo, NY—The Buffalo High School Theater Company is set to captivate audiences with its upcoming production of “Charlotte’s Web”, opening December 5 and running through December 7. The classic tale, adapted by Joseph Robinette from E.B. White’s beloved book, will be performed in the school’s auditorium, drawing in families and community members alike.

Performance Schedule

The performance schedule includes evening shows at 7 p.m. on December 5 and 6, along with both matinee and evening performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on December 7. The choice of this story is significant for the school’s theater program, which has seen a resurgence under the direction of Kadelyn Burd.

The Inspiration Behind the Play

Last spring, Burd was inspired to choose this particular production after her niece expressed her enthusiasm for reading “Charlotte’s Web” for school. Burd noted the importance of selecting a family-friendly show that would help to reconnect the theater department with the community. “I thought it would be the perfect way to rebuild that connection,” she mentioned. Additionally, she has a personal fondness for the story, adding, “selfishly, because I love it.”

Behind the Scenes Efforts

Preparations for the show have been extensive. Students have worked diligently on various aspects of production, including lighting, makeup, and set design. Liam Dunlap, one of the students involved, commented on the amount of effort that has gone into the show. “This is sort of the biggest thing we’ve done in a while, which is exciting,” he shared.

Costume Design and Character Development

Costuming for the characters, which play anthropomorphic animals, has been a collaborative effort among students. Senior Lily Dunlap, who plays Charlotte, has designed the costumes with a unique interpretation in mind. “We’re wearing human-esque clothes like you would think a pig would wear if they were a person,” Dunlap explained. Fellow student Ruthie Mantle, who portrays Wilbur, echoed this sentiment, stating that the team raided the costume closet and used creativity to create interpretive outfits.

Building Community Relationships

Burd hopes that this production will not only showcase the talent of the students but also renew interest in the theater department among the Buffalo community. She emphasized the magical experience of performing for elementary students, underscoring the department’s plans to engage local schools with special showings during the school day.

Anticipation for the Production

As the cast approaches the performances, excitement is building. The high school has welcomed many new members to the theater department, including freshmen like Emerson Barker. He eagerly shared his own journey, noting how he followed in his older brother’s footsteps by joining the theater. Barker is enthusiastic about his role as a baby cow, feeling a connection to his brother’s previous character.

Conclusion

With a cast eager to showcase their hard work and a community ready to support the revival of the theater program, “Charlotte’s Web” promises to be an engaging experience for all. The performances are not only an opportunity to enjoy a beloved story but also a vital step towards strengthening the ties between Buffalo High School and the wider community.
