Buffalo, NY—The Buffalo High School Theater Company is gearing up for its upcoming production of “Charlotte’s Web,” an adaptation of E.B. White’s beloved children’s book. The performances are scheduled for December 5 through December 7 in the high school auditorium, promising a heartwarming tale that celebrates friendship and collaboration.
The show’s director, Kadelyn Burd, was inspired to choose the play after her niece expressed excitement about reading “Charlotte’s Web” in school. Burd has been a pivotal figure in revitalizing the school’s theater program, which had diminished in recent years. According to Burd, the show is “selfishly” chosen because she loves it, but she also believes it serves as a perfect opportunity to reconnect the theater department with the community.
“Charlotte’s Web” tells the story of Wilbur, a young pig who discovers the value of friendship in unexpected places. With themes of loyalty and sacrifice, the narrative explores deeper truths about identity and compassion through the eyes of its animal characters. Senior Lily Dunlap, who is playing the role of Charlotte, highlighted the extensive preparations behind the scenes, including set design, lighting, and costume creation. “So much work has gone on,” she noted.
The performances will take place on December 5 and 6 at 7 p.m., as well as a matinee and evening show on December 7 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively, in the Buffalo High School auditorium. This family-friendly production aims to attract audiences from across the community.
With a goal of reviving interest in the performing arts, Burd is excited about the show serving as a bridge to renew community support for the theater program. “This is sort of the biggest thing we’ve done in a while, which is exciting,” Dunlap stated, emphasizing that the engagement and collaboration among the cast and crew have been both rewarding and necessary for a successful production.
One unique aspect of this production is its outreach to local elementary schools, where students will have the chance to experience live theater during the school day. Burd expressed, “It’s magical to perform for little kids,” as they often bring a sense of wonder and enthusiasm that inspires the actors.
As the cast prepares for the show, they are not only focused on their individual roles but also on the importance of working together. Ruthie Mantle, who plays Wilbur, emphasized the collective effort that goes into theater. “Theater is such a collaborative art,” she explained, noting how every role, from the actors to the technicians, plays a crucial part in the overall success of the production.
The cast features several new faces, including freshman Emerson Barker, who expressed enthusiasm for joining the department. He secured roles as a baby cow and the judge, indicating the strong connection to the theater legacy in his family, as his brother was also involved in high school productions.
Overall, Burd and her team are optimistic about the turnout for the performances. With a combination of returning dedicated members and newcomers, the Buffalo theater community is poised for a revival, driven by a shared passion for the arts.
As they approach their opening night, the anticipation in the auditorium grows. The cast and crew are eager to showcase their hard work and talent to the community, offering a heartwarming experience through “Charlotte’s Web” that celebrates the beauty in friendship and teamwork.
