Charlotte, N.C. – A sunny Tuesday afternoon turned into a scene of heartbreak and tragedy in East Charlotte as a devastating car crash resulted in the loss of two lives. This unfortunate incident took place on October 15, around 2 p.m., on East W.T. Harris Boulevard, just near The Plaza, and it has left the community in shock.
According to reports from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the crash involved a Hyundai Sonata driven by a 25-year-old man named De’Ontrey Taylor. He was traveling northbound at what witnesses described as a “high rate of speed.” As Taylor’s vehicle sped down the road, it crashed into a Toyota Camry that was making a left turn. The impact was so severe that it caused both vehicles to go over the curb and land in a grassy area off the side of the road.
Inside the Toyota Camry were two individuals, both of whom tragically lost their lives in this heartbreaking accident. The driver, Aneesah Akbar, aged 47, and her passenger, Darlene Akbar, aged 74, were found to have sustained serious injuries. After being rushed to the hospital, they were unfortunately pronounced dead. While details regarding their exact relationship remain unclear, it appears that they were indeed family.
De’Ontrey Taylor was also taken to the hospital, but thankfully, his injuries were non-life-threatening. Upon his arrival, hospital staff and police officers performed a screening and determined that he was impaired at the time of the crash. The details regarding the substances involved have not been disclosed yet, but the findings led to Taylor being taken into custody.
As a result of the tragic incident, Taylor has been charged with serious offenses. He faces two counts of felony death by a vehicle, one count of reckless driving, and one count of driving without a license. This series of charges reflects the gravity of the situation and the consequences of his actions that led to such a devastating loss for the Akbar family.
The loss of life in this incident has sent ripples of sorrow throughout the community. Friends, family, and neighbors are grappling with the sudden grief of losing two beloved individuals. Aneesah and Darlene Akbar were known in their circles, and their absence will be deeply felt.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are continuing their investigation into the crash. They have urged anyone with further information to reach out. Residents can give tips by contacting Detective Mercedes at 704-432-2169, ext. 5, or they can anonymously reach out to Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that impaired driving presents to our communities. It underscores the importance of safe driving practices and the need for awareness about the effects of substances on one’s ability to operate a vehicle. As the investigation unfolds, we hope that the families impacted will find a path toward healing and comfort during these difficult times.
