Charlotte’s Ceramic Scene: A Colorful Dive into Local Artistry

Meet the Ceramic Queens and Kings of Charlotte

Charlotte may have its fair share of bustling city life and Southern charm, but it is the creative spirit of local ceramic artists that is really catching the attention of art lovers. From cheeky cat figures to stunning murals, the ceramic scene here is definitely a treasure chest of color, humor, and striking aesthetics. Let’s dive into this vibrant world, where trash and beauty collide in the most delightful ways!

Grace Stott: Spinning Art from Everyday Life

In the heart of Charlotte, Grace Stott is making headlines with her unique take on ceramics. Her creations range from adorable cherubim holding empty Diet Coke cans to cheeky sculptures of cats engaged in what some might call “hygiene activities.” She’s even crafted stunning mosaics of naked women, playfully contorting to fit together like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. “People like shiny things,” she says, a mantra that captures the essence of her artistic philosophy.

Stott’s home is akin to an art gallery, overflowing with her magnificent works—there’s an unfinished mosaic in the bathroom, a mural taking shape in the kitchen, and even a quirky ceramic “lady box” on her side table. When asked about her chaotic artistic space, she chuckles, “No matter where I’m at, I will take over the space,” revealing that it’s a trait she shares with her adorable 3-year-old daughter, Mabel.

The Happy-Go-Lucky Artist

At just 34, Stott exudes a youthful energy that is infectious. You might even find yourself captivated by the braces on her smile. She reminisces about her formative years, where her love for art blossomed amid teenage angst and a quest for identity. “I had so many feelings about life and sexuality…” she explains. Growing up biracial in Charlotte, she felt a bit out of place until she discovered an unexpected connection to history—her ancestry includes two sisters from the infamous Salem witch trials!

Through art, Stott not only expresses herself but also creates community. She’s known for organizing group shows and exhibitions that foster collaboration among local artists. Recently, she participated in the “Too Hot to Handle” exhibition, showcasing whimsical ceramic mugs. “Public art is where it’s at,” she asserts passionately.

Patrick Cooley: Riding the Wave

Next up is Patrick Cooley, a former student of a renowned ceramics teacher, who has brought his sculpting talent from Kansas to Charlotte. Using the inspiration of the ocean, Cooley creates glossy ceramic pieces that mimic the beauty of nature. He exclaims, “The design industry is very much inspired by nature,” and his work continues this dialogue beautifully.

With a background in architecture and a big dream to become a full-time artist, Cooley is embracing every moment in this vibrant community. He sells his pieces on platforms like Etsy and Instagram, hoping to make waves in the local art scene.

Sam Mehalko and Kathy Murchison: Colorful Ceramics with a Cause

Another shining star in Charlotte’s ceramics world is Sam Mehalko, who kicked off her passion for pottery while in middle school. Fast forward a few years, and this 28-year-old transformed her love of ceramics into a full-time gig. Her sweet, colorful mugs and bowls have become a community favorite, available at local coffee shops and art markets.

Meanwhile, Kathy Murchison, a former stay-at-home mom, made the leap back into the working world by turning her old hobby into a passion project. “I enjoy the process of starting with a lump of clay and creating a lasting work,” she shares, as she transforms her backyard shed into a quaint studio.

Jing Huang and Zainab Elrahal: Global Inspirations

Joining the ranks of Charlotte’s ceramic artists are Jing Huang and Zainab Elrahal. Huang, who learned her craft in China, brings a world of wisdom and beauty with her abstract sculptures. “I start projects without a clear plan,” she explains, letting the art unfold naturally.

Elrahal, on the other hand, finds freedom in sculpting. “When I create sculptures, the constant vision issues are not as present…” she shares, emphasizing how her tactile experiences with clay resonate more deeply with her.
