CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Big changes are shaking things up in the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office after a top official decided to call it quits. Former Chief Deputy Kevin Canty handed in his resignation on Friday, and boy, did he not hold back! In a stunning letter that has the local community buzzing, Canty accused Sheriff Garry McFadden of running the agency into the ground and claimed it operates “like a third-world dictatorship.”
Canty’s letter, which was shared widely on social media, takes aim at Sheriff McFadden’s leadership style, calling it a “pure chaos” environment. The resignation comes on the heels of Canty’s assertion that he had witnessed first-hand the sheriff’s “denigrating and unprofessional comments” directed at command and executive staff. “The failures of this agency are due to your lack of professionalism, leadership, and managerial abilities,” Canty wrote. Ouch!
To give you a little background, Canty, a Charlotte native, was sworn into the Chief Deputy role just this past February. He joined the Sheriff’s Office after a solid career as Special Agent in Charge of the State Bureau of Investigation’s Charlotte Field Office. What’s more, he admitted to voting for McFadden twice, saying he initially brushed off some concerning information he heard about the sheriff.
Things took a turn when Canty received some “damning information” from the Charlotte Chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police. It made him rethink his support, and he wrote, “I thought for sure the allegations had to be exaggerations. … Sadly, I’m ashamed to say that the allegations were 100% accurate.” This revelation is causing quite a stir in the community!
Canty was initially excited to serve alongside McFadden, becoming part of history by being associated with the first Black sheriff in Mecklenburg County. However, his dreams of professionalizing the MCSO soon turned sour. “I thought I was allowed to do my job and professionalize the MCSO and help it return to a well-functioning agency,” he expressed. “But it soon became obvious to me that you did not want a chief deputy, you wanted a ‘Yes Man.’” It’s almost hard to believe that such allegations are coming from a respected figure like Canty!
As you can imagine, this dramatic resignation has raised a lot of eyebrows, prompting a response from Sheriff McFadden. While the sheriff’s office is tight-lipped about personnel matters, McFadden did share a statement to clarify his stance. “We are a great agency and we always have been,” he said confidently. “We will continue to be a great agency and I am confident that we will be an even better agency tomorrow than we are today.”
So, what’s next for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office? The community is watching closely as these events unfold. Many are left wondering how the agency will handle the fallout from this startling resignation and whether they’ll be able to resolve the internal strife that Canty has brought to light.
Whether you agree with Canty’s claims or stand behind McFadden, it’s clear that change is on the horizon in Charlotte’s law enforcement scene. Buckle up, because it looks like things are just heating up!
