Charlotte, N.C. is buzzing with excitement as we gear up for the 2024 General Election. With all 50 seats in the North Carolina state Senate facing a contest, there are plenty of eyes on the districts closest to our vibrant city! Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 5, when polls will close and the results will start pouring in. So, let’s break down what you can expect in those hotly contested races!
First up is the 29th district, which covers Anson, Richmond, and Montgomery counties, as well as a part of Union County. The current representative, Republican Dave Craven, who took office just this past year, is running for re-election. Craven finds himself going toe-to-toe with Democrat Kevin Clark. It’s a showdown you won’t want to miss, folks!
Next, we have the 33rd district covering Rowan and Stanly counties. Republican Carl Ford has been serving since 2019 and is looking to keep his seat in the upcoming election. His opponent, Democrat Tangela Morgan, is ready to challenge his hold on this district. Who will come out on top?
The 35th district spans much of Union County with a small slice of Cabarrus County. Republican Todd Johnson, also running for re-election after winning his seat in 2019, faces fierce competition from Democrat Robin Mann. Stay tuned for what promises to be an incredibly close race!
Over to the 36th district, which includes Alexander, Wilkes, Yadkin, and Surry counties. Current representative Republican Eddie Settle, who just assumed office in 2023, is up against Democrat Darren Staley. This race could be a real game-changer!
In the 37th district, Republican Vickie Sawyer is running for re-election against Democrat Kate Barr. This district covers all of Iredell County and a bit of Mecklenburg County. With both candidates well-known in their communities, it’s bound to be a lively contest!
Now, as we swing our gaze to the 42nd district, which is part of Mecklenburg County, we have a bit of a shake-up! Current representative Democrat Rachel Hunt is not seeking re-election as she makes her bid for lieutenant governor. The race here involves Democrat Mary Bradley and Republican Stacie McGinn — so who will take the reins?
Moving on to the 43rd district, this area covers much of Gaston County. Republican Brad Overcash is looking to defend his seat against Democrat Corey Creech. It’s definitely going to be a race to watch as voters weigh their options!
In the 44th district, covering Lincoln and Cleveland counties, along with part of Gaston County, Republican Ted Alexander faces off against Democrat Henry Herzberg. Alexander, who was elected in 2019, must now prove why he deserves another term!
The 45th district encompasses all of Catawba County and a slice of Caldwell County. In an interesting twist, current representative Republican H. Dean Proctor will not be returning for another fight and is stepping aside. The candidates aiming for his seat are Republican Mark Hollo and Democrat Kim Bost.
Next is the 46th district, which spans Burke and McDowell counties and includes part of Buncombe County. Here, Republican Warren Daniel is seeking to continue his long tenure since 2013, but he has Democrat John Ager nipping at his heels.
Finally, we have the 47th district, covering part of Caldwell County, part of Haywood County, and then all the way through to Madison, including counties like Watauga and Mitchell. Republican Ralph Hise, in office since 2011, is again running for re-election against Democrat Frank Hughes. Will they grip the thumb on this expansive area of North Carolina?
As you can see, the political scene is heating up! Be ready for a whirlwind of campaigns and discussions leading up to election day. We’ll be here tracking the results right after the polls close, so keep your eyes peeled for updates!
