Charlotte, NC – Scott Waybright, a former administrator at Charlotte Country Day School, has been charged with multiple felony counts related to secret peeping. This troubling news was relayed to the school community by David Mancos, the interim head of school, who informed the public of the incidents involving student and employee images found on Waybright’s school-issued laptop.
Police discovered between 10 to 12 images featuring “potential” students and staff, purportedly taken without consent. According to Mancos’ announcement, Waybright is accused of photographing individuals in public places using his mobile phone. There is no evidence to suggest hidden cameras were employed in private areas such as bathrooms or locker rooms, as stated by Mancos. He stressed that all individuals pictured were fully clothed in school attire.
Waybright was terminated from his position as head of school for academics on December 2. Following an allegation from a teacher regarding inappropriate photography in 2023, the school confiscated Waybright’s work laptop and mobile phone on November 18. Despite an initial search by school administrators failing to produce results, an external investigator later uncovered hundreds of inappropriate photos, some taken on campus and in public spaces.
Mancos noted that the school is co-operating with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) as they investigate. He articulated that Charlotte Country Day has established policies to prevent misconduct and thoroughly investigate any alleged violations. Plans are in place to form a task force that will collaborate with national experts to navigate this predicament effectively.
In light of the recent incidents, the school’s operating budget for the 2025-2026 year already included provisions for hiring two additional security personnel, both retired police officers from CMPD, set to commence their duties in January. Measures will also include engaging a risk management expert to bolster the school’s planning and oversight initiatives.
The community has expressed grave concern regarding the safety and well-being of students and staff members. Mancos reassured constituents that the school conducts extensive background checks on new employees and regular follow-ups every three years. An immediate notification system will now alert school authorities if any employee is arrested.
Mancos further revealed that a previous allegation dating back to 2017 had been investigated, yielding no evidence of wrongdoing. He stated he was unaware of any allegations in 2023 until before Thanksgiving, prompting immediate internal inquiries.
The case has cast a shadow over the Charlotte Country Day School, as parents and community members remain vigilant for updates and reassurances on student safety. Mancos concluded his message by reiterating the importance of the school’s responsibility to protect its students and the community.
