Charlotte Alumni Association Celebrates Connections as Homecoming Approaches
Charlotte, NC – As the autumn season progresses, the Charlotte Alumni Association is gearing up for significant events aimed at fostering connections between current students and alumni. The Association, nearing its 60th anniversary, has taken the opportunity during Alumni Takeover Month to engage the community through various activities and programming.
What is Happening?
The Alumni Association is focused on providing students and alumni with opportunities to stay connected, especially as graduation approaches in December. A key initiative is Niner Nation Week, a vibrantly organized series of events designed to encourage participation from both current students and alumni. “Last year, we engaged about 10,000 people across this week, so it’s a huge event,” shared Hannah Jakob, Director of Alumni Engagement Programming.
Why is This Important?
Maintaining relationships post-graduation is crucial for both alumni and the University. Jakob emphasized that the connection does not end after leaving the campus. “It is our job to help sustain that relationship and provide opportunities for alumni to connect,” she explained. This mission includes virtual events, in-person gatherings, and social media engagement, ensuring that alumni remain involved throughout their life stages.
Who is Leading the Charge?
Hannah Jakob has spearheaded these initiatives since her appointment in 2022. Since then, she has expanded her team to better manage the Harris Alumni Center and the year-round events organized by the Association. The team is divided into operations, which focus on the logistics of the center, and programming, which plans events aimed at engaging alumni.
Upcoming Events
As the semester progresses, the Alumni Association has several important events lined up. There will be a Senior Send-Off on December 5, Donning of the Kente on December 12, and the Legacy Draping Ceremony also on December 12. Additionally, the official 49er Ring Ceremony will take place, celebrating graduates and honoring their achievements.
Engaging Alumni Beyond Generosity
Jakob pointed out that alumni engagement is often misunderstood as being solely about donations. “Our job is not to ask for money; we connect alums to various opportunities, including volunteering and networking,” she explained. The Association collaborates with alums during events like move-in days and employs strategies like Fandemonium watch parties to support alumni-owned businesses while promoting sports and camaraderie.
Creating Lifelong Networks
The launch of the Future Alumni Network (FAN) this summer reflects the Association’s commitment to nurturing relationships between students and alumni. This new initiative aims to create a supportive environment for students as they transition into the workforce, supporting internships and networking opportunities.
Conclusion
The Charlotte Alumni Association is dedicated to maintaining a vibrant community through various engagement programs. With significant events on the horizon and a focus on connection, both current students and alumni can anticipate enriching experiences as they celebrate their ties to the University.
