Charlotte, N.C. – A woman was shot and killed early Friday morning at the Matthews Place Apartments, located on Woodway Oak Circle, just off Independence Boulevard. The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. and is currently under investigation by local authorities.
Police have identified the victim as 23-year-old Jenyah Kishawne Skyye Wright. She was discovered in the parking lot of the apartments suffering from a gunshot wound. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police quickly deployed crime scene investigators and detectives to the location to gather evidence. However, as of now, no arrests have been made. Police assure the community that there is no current threat to public safety.
“This is a relatively quiet community,” CMPD Major Gene Lim stated. “We’ve had some property crime but nothing to say that there’s any threat at this time.”
Despite the assurance of safety, a recent Crime Mapping search indicates a rise in local crime, with several assaults reported in the area within the past month. Notably, earlier this week, there was an armed robbery in the same parking lot where Wright was found.
This shooting marks the 83rd homicide recorded in Charlotte this year, a concerning increase compared to 60 at the same point last year.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding this tragic incident to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
