Shaping Charlotte: Lucia Zapata Griffith’s Impact on Architecture and Construction

Charlotte has long been a vibrant hub for growth and innovation, but few individuals have shaped the city’s architectural landscape quite like Lucia Zapata Griffith. For the past 40 years, this talented Latina has blazed trails in the architecture and construction sectors, paving the way for many women to follow in her footsteps. Her journey, filled with passion and determination, is a shining example of what can be achieved with hard work and a vision.

A Fresh Start in Charlotte

Lucia’s story began long before she made her mark in Charlotte. Originally hailing from Peru, she first visited the U.S. as an exchange student in Greenville, South Carolina. Years later, she returned to Charlotte after connecting with a family she lived with during her student exchange. “I never intended to stay, but after exploring Charlotte and hearing my friend rave about the city, I thought it was a wonderful place!” Griffith shared, encapsulating the sense of adventure that brought her to the Queen City in 1985.

The Birth of METRO Landmarks

In 1997, Griffith founded METRO Landmarks, a design and construction firm that has steadily risen to prominence. “I worked for a firm in uptown for a few years, then moved to a smaller firm where I became a partner,” she explained. “But when my daughter was about to start kindergarten, I wanted more control of my time. Starting my own business was the solution.”

Over the years, Griffith’s company has crafted numerous high-end residential and commercial projects across Charlotte, including some notable spots at the airport. “We’ve worked on everything from restaurants to high-end homes, adapting to the market’s needs along the way,” she said.

Construction Challenges and Triumphs

Challenges have not been absent from Griffith’s journey. The economic downturn of 2008 hit the construction industry hard. “It was terrible,” she recalls. Just when things seemed to be on the upswing with a high-end condo project, the market crashed. However, Griffith’s adaptability shone through as she pivoted her business towards commercial work, which led her team to take on airport projects. “Our first project at the airport was converting a KFC into a Wendy’s,” she remembered with a smile.

The Joy of Collaboration

One of the highlights of Griffith’s career has been the collaborative spirit she has nurtured within her teams. “Our subcontractors are from all walks of life, and they work together wonderfully,” she shared. “It’s not uncommon to have a job site where Spanish music is playing on one side and country on the other. The respect and camaraderie among everyone is truly heartwarming.”

Witnessing Change

As a Latina in construction, Griffith noted the significant changes she has seen over the years. When she arrived in Charlotte, there were few women in architecture and even fewer in construction. “Today, I’m proud to see so many women making their mark in this field. We need to celebrate that progress,” she added.

Community Support and Growth

Griffith also highlighted the vibrant and supportive community that has emerged in Charlotte’s Latino community. “There are many groups working tirelessly to uplift each other. Programs like Circle de Luz play a crucial role in mentoring young girls,” she said, emphasizing the importance of giving back to the community that supported her journey.

A Legacy of Achievement

Reflecting on her career, Griffith expressed pride in the impact she has had on others. “I’ve seen many individuals start with us and move on to bigger and better things. That’s what makes me proud,” she said with a warm smile.

The Future and Beyond

As for what lies ahead, Griffith shows no signs of slowing down. “I don’t see myself retiring,” she pointed out. “But with grandchildren in the picture, I’ve found the perfect balance to enjoy family time.” And as she continues her work, Griffith remains committed to supporting and inspiring the new generation of women entering the fields of architecture and construction.

In a city that’s constantly evolving, Lucia Zapata Griffith stands out as a beacon of possibility and hope. Through her work, she has not only transformed the cityscape of Charlotte but has also opened doors for countless women who aspire to make their mark in construction and design.
