Hey there, Charlotte! If you’re a fan of ballet, then get ready to liven up your calendars because the Charlotte Ballet is all set to kick off its 2024-25 season with an electrifying theme called “Unfiltered.” This year promises an exhilarating mix of fresh premieres, the return of familiar favorites, and even a new spin on classic stories. It’s just around the corner – the opening night is less than a month away!
Artistic director Alejandro Cerrudo gave us a sneak peek into what to expect this season, and it sounds absolutely thrilling! Perhaps the most anticipated highlight is the collaboration with talented choreographer Mthuthuzeli November, who made such a memorable impression last season with his work “From Africa with Love.” He’s back, and this time with a new piece titled “Vibes,” set to make its debut at the opening performance titled “Beyond the Surface.”
According to Cerrudo, November’s approach creates a wonderful atmosphere for the dancers, encouraging them to express their creativity. “He has humanity,” Cerrudo shared. “He knows how to read the room and builds a bond of trust with the artists.” This season, expect to feel the warmth and energy that November brings to the stage!
Alongside November’s new work are a couple of favorites that you won’t want to miss. The talented Jennifer Archibald is also back with her piece “Hdrm,” pronounced “headroom.” This contemporary work explores the often intricate themes of space and mental health, making it both thought-provoking and relatable.
Additionally, get excited for a world premiere from Omar Román De Jesús. Artistic director Cerrudo spoke highly of him, noting his reputation and the creativity he brings to the table. The Center for Dance, which hosts this opening performance, is known for its cozy atmosphere, allowing audiences to truly connect with the action onstage.
But that’s not all! This season is also bringing back the magical classic, “The Nutcracker,” which will be performed in December at the renowned Belk Theater. Enjoy the timeless score of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky performed live by the Charlotte Symphony, making this a festive must-see!
As we roll into March, brace yourself for the “Realm of Existence” showcase at the Knight Theater. This mixed-repertoire program includes “Walking Mad,” choreographed by the Swedish-born Johan Inger, set to the electrifying sounds of Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero.” As Cerrudo puts it, this piece is full of theatricality!
Excitingly, Cerrudo himself will be presenting two of his pieces. The first, “Cloudless,” features an intimate duet for female dancers, focusing on their connection with one another as they lift each other’s weight. “I wanted to explore two women partnering with each other,” he explained. It’s a beautiful exploration of companionship and support.
And let’s not forget about the lively “PACOPEPEPLUTO,” which exudes pure joy through dance with music by iconic crooner Dean Martin. Cerrudo emphasizes that this piece is all about basking in the joy of performing.
To wrap up the season in May, the ballet company will present “Carmen,” but with a twist! Picture the dramatic tale of passion and betrayal set against the vibrant backdrop of 1970s Las Vegas. The choreography by Andrea Schermoly will be accompanied by eye-catching new sets and costumes, breathing fresh life into this classic story.
The fall opener, “Beyond the Surface,” runs from October 4-26 at the Center for Dance on 701 N. Tryon Street. Tickets are already on sale, and you won’t want to miss a moment of this spectacular season! Be part of the magic and experience dance like never before!
