Charlotte, NC – The prep basketball season officially began on Tuesday night, showcasing a range of action-packed games from the area’s private school teams. Fans gathered to witness their favorite teams and players kick off the season, revealing early contenders and standout performances.
In the boys’ division, Charlotte Country Day dominated the South Charlotte Thunder with a convincing 83-50 victory. Leading the charge was junior Nick Diaz, who scored a game-high 19 points. He was supported by Jerome Lowery with 14 points and Joseph Youakim with 13 points as three players from Country Day reached double figures.
Meanwhile, Emily King made a triumphant return for the girls’ team at Metrolina Christian, scoring 23 points in a 52-25 win against Greater Cabarrus. This was King’s first game back following knee surgery, and she showed no signs of rust.
The night also highlighted impressive individual performances, including Brycen Redmon from Westminster Catawba, who scored a remarkable 26 points in a 65-48 victory over Legion Collegiate. Redmon has made a name for himself early this season, averaging 28 points per game over his first three contests.
On the girls’ side, Laylah Toscano from Jackson Day recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in a decisive 62-22 win over Bradford Prep. Toscano also contributed five steals and three assists, showcasing her all-around skills.
In the girls’ division, Charlotte Country Day and South Charlotte Thunder faced off with Country Day winning 63-22. Sam Vanderhave led with a game-high 20 points, further highlighting the team’s strength.
Over in the men’s division, Cannon School secured a comfortable 73-47 win against Winston-Salem Christian Regional. With this victory, Cannon improved to 2-1 for the season.
Upcoming matchups to watch this weekend include Westminster Catawba traveling to Fayetteville to face Freedom Christian Academy and Gaston Day hosting Caldwell Academy.
