Charlotte: Kennedy’s ‘Thursday Night Bridge Circle’ Meets Its Quota of Quips – and More

Since the last time a live performance was watched at St. John’s Baptist Church in 1987, the game of bridge has not been a part of many people’s lives. However, Ray Kennedy’s play, The Thursday Night Bridge Circle, running at Theatre Charlotte through March 24, brings the world of bridge back to the forefront.

A Lighthearted Look at a Bridge Circle

The play revolves around Louise Kennedy’s Thursday night bridge circle, where the hostess duties rotate among the members. The night in question sees a mix of regular members and some unexpected guests, including a college co-ed daughter, a liberal mother-in-law, and a new player from out of town.

A Comedic Time Bomb

Set in 1970, amid the backdrop of the civil rights movement and desegregation, the play takes a comedic turn as tensions rise among the conservative Southern ladies and the liberal newcomers. The arrival of a new player, Carmella, feared to be a judgmental Yankee, adds to the mix of personalities and perspectives.

A Cast of Colorful Characters

The ensemble cast, led by Tonya Bludsworth as Louise, brings to life the vibrant characters with humor and heart. Each character, from Mrs. Kennedy and Miss Caroline to Mary Carter and Bernice, adds layers to the unfolding drama and comedy.

Theatrical Brilliance

The theatrical production, directed by Dennis Delamar, showcases the talents of the actors and the intricate set design by Tim Parati. The script by Ray Kennedy is filled with Southern-fried quips and sharp dialogue, keeping the audience entertained and engaged throughout.

An Emotional Rollercoaster

As the evening progresses, the themes of friendship, family, and change come to the forefront, leading to emotional revelations and reconciliations. The play not only entertains but also touches on important social issues of the time.

A Memorable Theatrical Experience

Overall, The Thursday Night Bridge Circle offers a delightful mix of humor, drama, and heart, making it a must-see production at Theatre Charlotte. With a talented cast, witty dialogue, and engaging storytelling, the play delivers an unforgettable theatrical experience.
