Charlotte is buzzing with excitement as local companies dive headfirst into the world of artificial intelligence. From an innovative architecture firm to a digital bank, organizations in the Queen City are discovering how this groundbreaking technology can streamline their operations, cut costs, and enhance productivity.
The buzz around AI isn’t just hype. Camille Endacott, an assistant professor at UNC Charlotte, noted that this technology has been around for a while but is now taking on new dimensions with tools like generative AI. Companies are feeling the heat to adopt these advancements or risk falling behind. “There’s a lot of curiosity about what AI might help companies accomplish,” Endacott remarked, highlighting the potential for real-time data analytics, which can lead to smarter decision-making and operational efficiencies.
AI’s impact is felt across various sectors such as human resources, supply chain management, and software development, according to Endacott. Companies are already utilizing AI to enhance the way they service customers. By automating repetitive tasks, workers can focus on more complex issues, enhancing creativity and job satisfaction.
Dan Drees, president of AvidXchange Holdings Inc., confirmed this shift, stating, “Most roles likely to be replaced by AI involve mundane tasks.” This transition means that businesses will need to invest in training employees to work alongside AI tools to maximize efficiency.
One prime example is Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, the largest architecture firm in the Charlotte area. The firm launched its Regen CoLab last year to explore innovative technologies, including AI. Dan Knowles, the chief technology officer, said their initial exploration into generative AI has been eye-opening. The firm is already seeing positive returns on its investment with expenses under $90,000 for their AI initiatives, including software licensing and time invested.
Knowles is optimistic about AI’s potential to transform how Little operates internally as well. “We’re working on a ChatGPT-like solution for our workforce,” he shared, eager to see how AI can redefine their services.
Another company at the forefront is Charlotte’s Kingsmen Software. Since its inception in 2013, Kingsmen has integrated AI into its core services, focusing on custom software for sectors like finance and healthcare. Managing partner Kevin Carney proudly stated that their use of AI has ramped up productivity significantly. “What we can do is mock up software faster and with better code quality,” he explained. They are witnessing project timelines shrink from a year to about nine months, thanks to AI tools that streamline coding and testing processes.
Carney mentions that they only spend around $1,000 per month on AI tools, an affordable investment that yields extraordinary results, helping Kingmen’s clients meet deadlines faster than ever.
In the financial sector, Ally Financial has been utilizing AI for traditional tasks, but it’s now stepping into the world of generative AI with its proprietary tool, Ally.ai. Sathish Muthukrishnan, the chief information officer at Ally, explained how the platform boosts productivity by automating customer interactions, saving time, and providing valuable insights into customer trends.
Ally.ai can transcribe and summarize customer calls, taking a once labor-intensive process and streamlining it. Muthukrishnan emphasized how the blend of advanced AI capabilities and modern data storage solutions makes this technology more accessible and cost-effective than ever.
On the healthcare front, Premier Inc. has made significant strides by rebranding its tech platform to PINC AI. With a focus on clinical intelligence and machine learning, the company uses AI to improve patient care and streamline processes. COO Angela Lanning pointed out that this technology helps identify barriers in medical insurance enrollment, ensuring that underserved patients receive the care they need.
“This is about saving lives through faster diagnosis and treatment,” Lanning concluded, underlining the pivotal role AI plays in the healthcare sector.
As AI continues to evolve, businesses throughout Charlotte are not just adopting it; they are embracing it as a vital part of their growth strategy. With the right training and tools, these companies are paving the way for enhanced efficiency, cost savings, and improved customer experiences.
Charlotte’s vibrant business landscape is a testament to the promise of AI, showcasing how innovation and technology can work hand in hand to create a brighter, more efficient future. If you’re in the area, keep an eye out for what’s next in this exciting journey!
