Charlotte, NC – The air was electric this Tuesday as thousands of eager voters flocked to polling precincts across the Charlotte area. From early morning, long lines snaked around buildings as folks showed up ready to make their voices heard in what’s shaping up to be a historic presidential election.
According to the North Carolina State Board of Elections, as many as 4.7 million people have already cast their ballots early, representing over half of the registered voters in the state. Nationwide, an incredible 78 million ballots have already been submitted out of approximately 162 million eligible voters across the U.S. In Charlotte’s own Mecklenburg County, nearly 430,579 registered voters took advantage of early voting, showcasing the enthusiasm among citizens to take part in democracy.
By 3:30 p.m., outside the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library – University City Regional branch, the rain had picked up, but it didn’t deter the determined voters. Poll worker Kate Cruz, 26, was thrilled to see a younger crowd at the polls, remarking, “It’s been going really well, very smoothly.” Kate shared her own reasons for being there – to inspire and represent the younger generation in the voting process. “I voted in the 2022 primaries and didn’t see many young faces, so I wanted to change that,” she explained.
Cruz encouraged first-time voters to check their precinct locations ahead of time, especially with college students often registered in different areas. “There’s so many resources online… it will only take a couple of seconds to be informed,” she said, with a hint of enthusiasm in her voice.
Two first-time voters, Quintin Clark and Isavior Brooks from UNC Charlotte, shared their bittersweet voting experience. After an hour and a half wait, they found out they were registered in different locations and had to leave for class. “I’m a little disappointed, but it’s my fault,” Brooks said. Their excitement echoed when they talked about voting for Vice President Kamala Harris.
Another first-timer, Bernice Carrillo, 19, beamed with pride as she checked in to vote. “I’m glad that I’m able to participate in something that’s going to actually make a difference,” she said, emphasizing the importance of voting for the issues that matter to regular citizens.
Amid this bustling atmosphere, a quirky incident occurred when unexpected DJs appeared at several precincts in neighboring counties. According to Iredell County Board of Elections Director Susie Jordan, “We told them that they had to leave.” It turns out, the group “DJs at the Polls” aimed to bring a festive vibe around the election but unfortunately didn’t arrange prior approval. “You can’t make this stuff up,” said Sharon Main, Rowan County Board of Elections director, while acknowledging that most voting was running smoothly.
In a less enjoyable moment, a vehicle collision occurred at a polling site in Belmont involving an 89-year-old driver and a Gaston College security officer. Thankfully, injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. However, polls across the region were still buzzing with voters as they waited to cast their ballots.
As the clock continues to tick down to closing time at 7:30 p.m., the call for voter patience and preparedness remains strong. “It’s essential to check your polling location before heading out, and yeah, bring an umbrella while you’re at it!” Cruz reminded eager voters.
As Charlotte comes alive with the spirit of democracy, everyone seems determined to make this Election Day one for the history books. For many, it’s about exercising a hard-earned right, and judging by the turnout and enthusiasm, every vote truly counts!
