Charlotte Comes Together: A Season of Giving and Charitable Impact

Hey there, Charlotte! The spirit of generosity is alive and kicking this December, and there’s no better time than now to shine a light on the amazing local charities doing the good work that keeps our community thriving. As many of you know, this is our fifth annual Charity Shout-Out, where we highlight organizations that our fellow Ledger members have praised for their invaluable services. Did you know that about one-third of all charitable giving happens in December? With the holiday season upon us, it’s a great opportunity to support causes that might need a little extra boost during this time.

We recently had the pleasure of hearing from our community, who shared their admiration for an impressive 57 charities. We’ve organized these recommendations into categories for your convenience, because let’s face it, sometimes it just feels overwhelming to sift through them all! This year, we’ll focus on charities in five categories: arts, community development, education, environmental conservation, and healthcare. And keep your eyes peeled for tomorrow’s bonus edition where we explore human services, human rights, and social advocacy!

Arts

First up, let’s dive into the arts! One shining star is Arts+, which breaks down financial barriers to make arts education accessible to everyone. Local supporter Jon Littlepage says, “Everyone deserves access to art and music and all the benefits they bring.” This charity’s mission is all about ensuring no one misses out on the transformative power of the arts.

And how about The Independent Picture House? It’s not just a community cinema; it’s a vibrant hub for film lovers. Tom Eiselt couldn’t be prouder of how they are “engaging, educating, and enabling the Charlotte community through the art of film.”

Community Development

When it comes to building strong communities, Freedom Communities is making waves. They’ve touched over 510 families by helping them find opportunities and affordable housing. As Suzanne Hunt says, they are “creating lasting change in Charlotte.”

The Charlotte ToolBank is another essential resource, offering low-cost tools to nonprofits across Mecklenburg County. With over 13,000 items in stock, they’re a backbone for impactful community initiatives.

Education

In the education arena, the Augustine Literacy Project is doing phenomenal work! They provide free, high-quality literacy tutoring to children in high-need schools. As Carol Gray-Adler enthusiastically put it, “I’m proud to be a part of an organization that provides free, high-quality literacy tutoring.”

Also noteworthy is Generation Nation, which is all about cultivating leadership among students in grades K-12. You won’t find a more dedicated team when it comes to fostering civic engagement in our youth!

Environmental Conservation

On the environmental front, check out Sustain Charlotte. This group has been working tirelessly to push for responsible growth and environmental conservation, ultimately improving the quality of life for all Charlotteans. Lauren Sawyers praises their role, stating they are helping “make the city more resilient to future challenges.”

Healthcare

And let’s not forget healthcare! The Cook Community Clinic is a beacon of hope for the uninsured in our area, offering essential health services for over 10,000 neighbors in the past 26 years. Their mission is to create a welcoming space that leads to healing and hope, which is invaluable for so many.
