As the Deputy City Attorney for the City of Charlotte, Lina James brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role. In a recent Fast Five interview, James shared her thoughts on working for the city, her biggest priorities, and what Asian American Pacific Islander Month means to her.
Lina James leads four teams of attorneys as the Deputy City Attorney, offering legal support and advice to all city departments on their public safety, business, and operational needs. With 16 years of experience, she has worked on major projects such as the Hornets Arena and the NASCAR Hall of Fame, while also advising on national political conventions and COVID response strategies.
One of James’ biggest organizational priorities right now is to lead the way in innovation and technology adoption within the legal framework. She believes that as the largest municipal office in North Carolina, the City Attorney’s office has a responsibility to set new standards for service to city councils, administrations, and communities.
James finds the intersectionality of law, policy, and politics intriguing in her role. She enjoys the diverse range of clients she advises each day, from elected officials to first responders and field staff. Working alongside a qualified legal team and being involved in significant city projects adds to her satisfaction in serving the City of Charlotte.
As an Indian American, James recognizes the importance of Asian American Pacific Islander Month in highlighting the diversity and contributions of the AAPI community. She hopes for a future where Asians of all backgrounds are seen, recognized, and celebrated year-round. James encourages individuals to support and engage with the AAPI community not just in May, but throughout the year.
When it comes to dining in Charlotte, James enjoys Enat Ethiopian for its cultural connection to her childhood in Ethiopia. She also has a love for Asian cuisine, particularly enjoying dim sum and masala dosa.
