Charlotte, NC – On a day meant for celebrations, our community faces a heart-wrenching tragedy. While many revel in the joy of QCity Metro’s sweet 16 birthday celebration, we also pause to reflect on recent events that remind us of the fragility of life.
This week marks a significant milestone for QCity Metro, a local beacon of news and information that has served the Black community in Charlotte-Mecklenburg for the past 16 years. With the heartbeat of local, independent, Black-owned, and Black-led media pulsing in the background, the organization is asking for your support to continue its valuable work into the future.
“Your support is our only wish,” said Glenn H. Burkins, the publisher, inviting community members to pitch in with donations, no matter how big or small. The goal? To prepare for another 16 years of delivering essential news and hosting engaging community events. Every dollar counts, and it’s clear that the community’s involvement is key to their mission.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), the unfortunate event unfolded just after 8 p.m. when Hines was walking on the roadway. A 2000 Lexus RX300, driven by 45-year-old Tamika Smyre, collided with him. Despite the emergency medical team’s quick response to the scene, Hines was pronounced dead, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
The CMPD confirmed that speed was not a factor in the collision. However, the driver, Smyre, has now been charged with serious offenses including driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license, and possessing marijuana. Such charges raise questions about safety and accountability on our roads.
Smyre was taken into custody following the incident and released the following day on bail. The legal outcomes of these charges remain to be seen, but the impact of this accident will undoubtedly be felt within the community for a long time.
In light of this tragedy, it’s essential for us to come together as a community to support each other and promote safety on our streets. Advocates urge everyone to keep an eye on their surroundings while walking and driving, ensuring that we are all practicing safe habits.
If you’d like to support QCity Metro in its mission to serve the Black communities of Charlotte, consider making a donation today. This organization bites off more than just the news; they aim to connect, celebrate, and inform, highlighting the issues that matter most.
As we navigate through these mixed feelings of celebration and mourning, let’s remember the power of community. QCity Metro is more than just a media outlet; it’s a platform that voices the needs and concerns of its community members. Join hands with them as they march into the future—together, we can ensure that local, independent, and Black-led media continues to thrive in Charlotte.
So as you soak in the beats of the celebrations but also reflect on the somber realities, remember: our community deserves the spotlight, our stories deserve to be told, and every little bit of support helps to keep this vital organization alive and engaging for many more years to come.
