Charlotte Cross Country Coach Arrested for Alleged Inappropriate Relationship with Student

CHARLOTTE, NC — A former cross country coach and substitute teacher at Charlotte Country Day School has been arrested after a former student accused him of attempting to engage in sexual acts with her while she attended the school. Matthew Philip Elliott, 39, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a student, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).

Allegations Surface

The allegations came to light after the woman reported the incidents to the police on November 8. She claimed that Elliott had flirted with her and made numerous advances during her time as a student at the school. The woman indicated that the inappropriate relationship began during the school year, with incidents occurring in late January and late February of this year.

Details of the Relationship

According to the police affidavit, the former student alleged that Elliott kissed her on two separate occasions and exposed himself to her while they were involved in this inappropriate relationship. She further stated that Elliott had attempted to have sex with her.

During their investigation, authorities uncovered evidence pointing to a pattern of communication between the two. The woman provided phone call records that displayed frequent conversations with Elliott throughout the day and night. In October, the communication escalated to text messages where Elliott allegedly wished her a happy birthday and expressed that he was still “in love” with her.

School’s Response

The investigation revealed that the school had previously been made aware of an allegation concerning Elliott having another inappropriate relationship with a different student earlier this year. Following his arrest, Charlotte Country Day School terminated Elliott’s employment and prohibited him from entering school premises, according to an email sent to parents by interim head of school David Mancos.

Mancos reassured parents in his communication that the school promptly followed its protocols after learning of the accusations. This included placing Elliott on administrative leave and reaching out to law enforcement. He also stated that the school is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Support for Students

Recognizing the potential impact of these allegations on current students, Mancos mentioned that counselors would be available for students to speak with. He emphasized that the school had not received any other complaints regarding Elliott’s conduct from former or current students, but invited anyone with additional information to contact law enforcement.

Legal Proceedings

As the legal process unfolds, court records indicate that Elliott has posted a secured bond of $10,000 following his arrest. The outcome of the charges against him is yet to be determined as the investigation progresses.

The allegations against Elliott raise serious concerns about the safety and well-being of students within educational environments. As parents and community members wait for more information, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance when it comes to protecting students.
