Charlotte Detectives Working to Identify Man Who Robbed University City Circle K

Charlotte, N.C. – Detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) are actively working to identify a man who robbed a convenience store in University City and assaulted one of the store’s employees.

The incident took place on Wednesday, March 13, just before 11:30 p.m. at the Circle K located at 7747 N. Tryon Street. Surveillance footage from the store captured the man approaching the front counter with an item before lunging towards the cash register during the transaction. Detective Jacqueline Clyburn, CMPD’s new Crime Stoppers coordinator, described the incident, stating that “he and the clerk struggled, with the clerk trying to push him back away, and he assaulted the clerk.”

Encouraging Non-Intervention During Robberies

Clyburn highlighted that CMPD officers advise store clerks to refrain from intervening during robberies. “We don’t encourage fighting back. We don’t want you to be injured,” she emphasized. The surveillance footage depicted the suspect fleeing from the store after a brief 30-second scuffle with the clerk. Notably, the suspect did not wear a mask or face covering during the robbery, and was clad in a hat, a short-sleeved jacket, and black and gray pants.

“I’ve seen a lot over the years, so very little surprises me sometimes. If people are desperate enough, they’ll do things that you wouldn’t expect,” Clyburn remarked about the robbery incident.

Seeking Information from the Community

Anyone with information regarding the robbery is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters have the option to remain anonymous and may be eligible to receive a cash reward if their information leads to an arrest.
