Officers are continuing to look for 22-year-old Markayla Johnson, 4-year-old Miracle Johnson, and 7-month-old Messiah Johnson. Posters put on utility poles in the area are asking for people to keep a watchful eye out for them.
“This is a tragedy for her and her children to be missing I mean it’s very sad,” neighbor Janeka Lindsey said.
Lindsey lives around the Orchard Trace Condos and knew Markayla only in passing, but was heartbroken to hear the news of the missing family.
As the days pass the mystery widens. “I see people, I don’t say nothing to nobody because it’s kind of dangerous over here,” Lawnda Porter said. “This neighborhood has been like this for years. For years.”
Even though people say currently there are no clear signs of foul play in the case of the missing mother and her kids, Porter said the area has a reputation.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the family disappeared on March 3 along Orchard Trace Lane. So far, she hasn’t contacted family to let them know she’s okay. People around the area say she was here visiting her boyfriend, who they have not seen for days either. His car and motorcycle are still parked out in the parking lot with a business card from a CMPD missing persons detective lodged in the side window.
Residents are a little skittish about the area. J’ohnna Cobb sometimes plays with Miracle and said she is worried because the neighborhood can be rough at times. “This neighborhood is dangerous,” Cobb said. “I mean one time me and my friend saw a man right there in particular…there was a man sleeping there, with a knife or a gun.”
Neighbors hope the family will be found safe, but that does not stop the worry. “I wouldn’t want that to be anything any family has to go through,” Lindsey said. “I hope they find her.”
The family disappeared so quickly, no one even knows what they were wearing at the time. Anyone with information that could bring the family home is asked to call police.
