In the heart of Charlotte, a family is grappling with overwhelming grief following a devastating incident that took the lives of two beloved members. On October 15, a mother and daughter were tragically killed in a car accident on East WT Harris Boulevard, allegedly caused by a suspected drunk driver who was speeding.
The family, which includes seven daughters, is still coming to terms with the loss of their adored 74-year-old mother, Darlene Akbar, and her daughter Aneesah Akbar. “I feel like I have a hole in my heart from my mom and my sister that can never be replaced,” reflected Tynetta Lindsay, one of the sisters. “We just miss them so much,” added Kimberly Akbar, sharing the emotional weight they all carry in this painful time.
It’s been a tough month for the Akbar family, who also had to cope with the recent passing of their father, Imam Khalil Akbar, due to cancer. In the days that followed, the sisters dedicated themselves to caring for their mother, ensuring someone was always by her side. On the day of the accident, Aneesah had taken their mother to a doctor’s appointment, eager to support her as she navigated her health challenges.
“That particular day she was like, ‘OK, you all don’t worry about it. I got mom,’” Kimberly recalled, her voice heavy with emotion. The sisters were grateful for Aneesah’s independence at that moment, but just three minutes away from home, tragedy struck.
The sisters find comfort in the life lessons their parents taught them. Khalidah Akbar shared how their mother returned to school after having seven daughters and being married young. “She earned her nursing degree and showed us the value of hard work and perseverance,” she said, highlighting how these values are guiding them through this tumultuous time.
In the wake of this tragedy, police arrested 25-year-old De’Ontrey Taylor, charging him with felony death by vehicle and reckless driving. Authorities say he was under the influence when the accident occurred. “My sister, my mom, we can’t replace them. Our family is broken,” expressed Tynetta, also emphasizing the urgency for change in the community.
The family is now advocating for a greater awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. Khalidah noted, “The way we see this is it’s a sign that there is more work to be done in the community. There is more education to be done in the community as well, as far as not drinking and driving.”
Current reports state that Taylor is in jail with a bond set at $300,000. While he had no prior criminal history, he did receive a citation last year for speeding, going 87 mph in a 45 mph zone. That incident resulted in a prayer for judgment which led to the charges being dismissed, a fact that raises questions and concerns for the Akbar family.
This tragic incident has shaken the community, and the Akbar sisters, with their hearts full of love for their lost family members, hope that by sharing their story, they can inspire others to think twice before getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
As they navigate their grief, they hold on to the memories of Darlene and Aneesah, cherishing the lessons they imparted. “We want their legacy to live on,” added Khalidah. These brave sisters are determined to honor their family by creating a safer community for everyone.
While the road ahead is undoubtedly challenging, the Akbar family showcases resilience and the crucial need for community support in the face of unimaginable loss. No family should endure such pain, but through their grief, they hope to light the way to a brighter, safer future.
