It’s easy to overlook Charlotte’s film scene, but Morong invites us to view it through a lens of appreciation. “You don’t know how many film festivals and film series you actually have in this city,” he encourages. With nearly 25 years of history, the festival is a vibrant contributor to the local arts scene.

History and Growth

The festival was initially started in 2006 by local filmmaker Louis Gurgitano, who envisioned a space for local and regional filmmakers to present their work. Gurgitano sparked a movement after attending the Asheville Film Festival and realizing there was a gap in Charlotte’s cultural offerings. His first festival showcased 66 films across three venues and laid the foundation for future iterations.

Over the years, other festivals emerged, like the Charlotte Black Film Festival and the Charlotte Latino Film Festival, further diversifying the city’s film landscape. The importance of community and representation is clear as various festival leaders work tirelessly to shine a light on underrepresented voices and stories.

A Vibrant Community of Filmmakers

The work of passionate individuals like Dennis Darrell, who fought for Black film programming, demonstrates the robust grassroots efforts making Charlotte a film-rich environment. Though Darrell’s contributions ended with his untimely passing in 2010, the legacy of his work continues through initiatives like the Reel South Film Festival and current programming dedicated to amplifying African American experiences.

Similarly, when Giovanna Torres and her husband moved to Charlotte seeking Latino film representations, they found a lack of platforms. They launched the CineCasual blog as a way to share their love for Latin American cinema. Their passion ultimately led to the debut of the Charlotte Latino Film Festival, aimed at showcasing diverse Latino stories and fostering community connections.

Collaborative Spirit

The spirit of collaboration is palpable within Charlotte’s film scene. The current festival model integrates local, regional, and international films under one roof, catering to a wide array of interests. Morong states, “If you’re only interested in student films, we have those. If you’re only interested in local and regional films, we have those. If you’re interested in the bigger art house and independent films, we have those. We’ve got it all covered.”

Charlotte’s film landscape continues to evolve, and the opening of the Independent Picture House in 2022 provided an excellent venue for the increasing programming options. The festival will continue to honor its founding mission—originally set by Gurgitano—while also looking ahead to welcome new stories and formats.
