Celebrating Black Artistry

Charlotte Welcomes Back ‘From the Heart’ Exhibit Celebrating Black Artists

Charlotte is buzzing with excitement as the Harvey B. Gantt Center opens its doors tonight for the highly anticipated From the Heart exhibition. This exhibition features a stunning collection of 58 pieces from 20 talented artists, and it marks the first time since 2015 that the community can experience this heartfelt showcase of artwork by Black artists from the 19th and 20th centuries.

A Historic Celebration

This exhibit is one of the last major events celebrating the Gantt Center’s 50th anniversary. A special opening celebration tonight will feature remarks from Gantt Center President and CEO Bonita Buford, along with representatives from Bank of America, which generously donated the exhibit. It’s a moment to reflect on the heritage of art and the significance it holds within Black communities.

The Hewitts’ Legacy

The collection on display is a piece of history in itself, primarily sourced from the accretive efforts of a husband-and-wife duo, the Hewitts. Over the past 50 years, they have tirelessly amassed a remarkable collection that comprises around 500 pieces. The Gantt Center is showcasing a selection from this vast collection, which is seen as a unique opportunity to dive into the world of prominent artists such as Romare Bearden.

Ryan Thomas, the collections & exhibitions coordinator for the Gantt Center, expressed how inspiring the Hewitts’ story is. “They didn’t come from a very wealthy background, but they were able to amass a really significant collection of some really prominent names,” Thomas shared. “They’re middle-class everyday professionals, and their love of art fueled their passion to collect.”

An Exhibit to Remember

But what can attendees expect from the From the Heart exhibition? Thomas emphasizes the importance of appreciating the contributions of the “old masters” within the art world. “We have a lot of contemporary shows, and I think this is a good juxtaposition to that,” he noted. Thomas hopes that this exhibit will bring in a diverse crowd that appreciates the rich history of art.

In the Community’s Hands

As the Gantt Center draws near to the close of its golden anniversary, it’s the perfect time for the community to come together and celebrate. Art has a way of connecting people, and the Gantt Center is committed to ensuring that the doors remain open for everyone to explore, learn, and appreciate. “It’s our mission to serve the Black communities in Charlotte-Mecklenburg by publishing news and information relevant to the lives of our readers,” the center’s officials stated, reaffirming their commitment to cultural expression and education.

Get Involved!

As this milestone event unfolds, community support is essential. The Gantt Center relies on reader donations and local contributions to support its mission. If you’re inspired by the arts and want to make a difference, consider donating to support this important work. Your gift matters, and it helps pave the way for future exhibitions and events.

Join us tonight and be a part of this enriching experience! Engage with Charlotte’s art scene, learn about its history, and perhaps even find a piece of yourself in the stories these artworks tell. The From the Heart exhibition is not just an art display; it’s a celebration of culture, identity, and community spirit.
