In a shocking turn of events, a 31-year-old man from Charlotte has been federally indicted for a hate crime that unfolded at Zämbies Pizza in the lively NoDa neighborhood. The incident, which took place on June 8, 2024, left customers and staff shaken but also garnered a lot of attention in the community.
On that fateful day, Maurice Hopkins found himself in hot water after making some racially charged remarks directed at a group gathered at the beloved pizza spot. His comments didn’t sit well with other patrons, and soon enough, staff politely asked him to leave the restaurant. However, instead of walking away, things took a turn for the worse.
Hopkins became visibly upset and made a shocking threat to return with a gun, indicating that he “had something for them” and mentioned he would “get his AR.” It’s a phrase that could send chills down anyone’s spine, highlighting a level of aggression that is far from acceptable.
Shortly after making those comments, witnesses reported seeing Hopkins return to the restaurant in a white car, this time visibly armed. Upon arriving, he pointed a gun at an individual who attempted to distract him from entering and demanded his pizza, showcasing an alarming escalation from mere words to an armed confrontation.
Even though he walked toward the restaurant, he ultimately left the scene without any pizza in hand. But the damage was done – an atmosphere filled with tension replaced the usual buzz of a pizza place known for its good vibes and tasty slices.
The investigation that followed included collecting witness statements and examining surveillance video from the restaurant. Authorities also dug into vehicle registration records that pinpointed Hopkins as the key suspect. All the pieces fell into place, revealing a troubling incident that could no longer be ignored.
On November 21, the federal indictment against Hopkins was unsealed, detailing allegations that his actions were intended to intimidate and interfere with the eight victims present at the time, based on their race, color, religion, and national origin. Such behavior goes against the values of community and acceptance that many people hold dear.
Individuals found guilty of hate crimes can face serious repercussions. If convicted, Hopkins could face up to a maximum of 10 years in prison for each civil rights charge brought against him, along with a mandatory minimum sentence related to the firearms charge. Given the seriousness of the allegations, it’s clear that justice will take its course, and a federal district court judge will decide the final sentencing based on guidelines and various factors.
The Charlotte community is undoubtedly processing what happened that day. For a city that prides itself on diversity and inclusivity, such incidents can feel like a harsh reminder that not everyone shares those values. However, supportive voices are loud and clear, with many wanting to move forward by reaffirming their stance against hate and violence in any form.
As this case continues to unfold, residents are left to hope for resolution and greater understanding. Everyone deserves a safe space to enjoy pizza and have a good time, free from fear and intimidation.
