Charlotte, North Carolina, has recently seen a buzz of excitement, and it all revolves around a massive construction project at the Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. On Tuesday, a towering construction crane made quite the impression as it helped lift the final steel beams into place during a topping out ceremony. This event marks a significant step toward completing the much-anticipated 12-story New Advanced Care Facility at the medical center, which promises to transform healthcare in the region for decades to come.
As onlookers gathered to witness the ceremony, it was clear that Atrium Health is serious about enhancing healthcare services in the area. Chan Roush, the vice president and facility executive for the flagship center, described the facility as crucial for supporting the growth of the City of Charlotte. Set to cost an impressive $900 million, the project is expected to be a game changer for those in need of medical assistance within the community.
“It’s absolutely critical to keep up with the growth of this community and allow us to continue to provide some of the clinical services that are unique to Carolina’s Medical Center and Atrium Health,” Roush expressed. With the region’s only Level 1 trauma center on its premises, the facility will play an essential role in treating patients facing sudden and severe injuries that require immediate attention.
With great anticipation, Charlotte residents await the opening of this new facility, which Atrium Health plans to unveil in 2027. The facility promises to boast a slew of features designed to enhance patient care:
Roush revealed that the project has been in the making for several years. Another sizable addition to the Atrium Health landscape is the David L. Conlan Center, which opened in January 2023. This $100 million facility replaced an outdated building and includes 72 beds, private treatment spaces, a therapy garden, and 16,000 square feet dedicated to therapy for both inpatient and outpatient services.
The construction of the new Advanced Care Facility has provided job opportunities for many in the community. Currently, around 600 workers are involved in building the facility, with an expected influx of 900 more workers joining to ensure the project is completed on time. Charlotte-based Rodgers Builders and DPR Construction are leading the charge in this ambitious endeavor.
In an exciting twist, Atrium has revealed that robots will play a role in delivering medicine—and even ice cream—to patients within the new facility. This innovative approach, along with the support of more than 1,500 nurses, doctors, and staff members, signifies a breakthrough in healthcare service delivery for the Charlotte community.
As the plans for the New Advanced Care Facility continue to unfold, it’s clear that Atrium Health is committed to enhancing the quality of care for the millions of patients they serve. The largest nonprofit health system in the U.S. with more than 68 hospitals and over 1,000 healthcare locations, Atrium Health’s vision for local growth is unmistakable.
With the finishing touches being placed on what will be a landmark facility, the future looks bright for not only Atrium Health but for everyone in Charlotte who values access to outstanding healthcare.
