Charlotte Braces for Hurricane Helene: High School Football Schedule Shifts
Hey there, Charlotte! It looks like we’re in for yet another stormy weekend, and that means our high school football scene is getting a little reshuffle. With potential Hurricane Helene making its way toward the Southeast later this week, athletic officials are on their toes as they navigate the unpredictable weather forecast.
Rescheduling Games Amid the Storm
So here’s the scoop: of the six weekends we’ve seen so far in the high school football season, more than half have been marred by less-than-ideal weather conditions on Friday nights. The forecast shows that Helene will still be a tropical storm when it moves into northeast Georgia on Thursday night, and Charlotte could see some serious effects from it.
As we all know, weather forecasts can change rapidly. Initially, the prediction indicated that the most severe conditions would hit on Friday evening and into the night. But it looks like the heavy rain and strong winds are now expected to pour in starting Thursday night and lasting through Friday morning. So, hold onto your hats (and umbrellas), folks!
As of late Tuesday afternoon, more than a dozen games in our area have already been rescheduled. In fact, two significant matchups have been shifted to 7 p.m. Wednesday: Harding at North Mecklenburg, and Covenant Day at Charlotte Latin. Here’s the rundown of the latest changes:

In total, about 75 games across the Carolinas have already been rescheduled. Meteorologist Justin Lane from the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg warned that the worst of Helene’s weather is expected to unfold from Charlotte and move westward. He mentioned that we could see rainfall amounts ranging from 4 to 7 inches, along with wind gusts pushing anywhere from 35 to 50 mph in the western Carolinas.
Soccer and Volleyball Feeling the Weather Impact
And it’s not just football that’s feeling the effects of this impending storm! The boys’ high school soccer schedule has also taken a hit. The much-anticipated matchup between Myers Park (currently at a stellar 7-0-1) and Ardrey Kell (8-1-3) has been moved to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ardrey Kell, originally slated for Thursday. It’s shaping up to be an exciting evening for soccer fans!
Additionally, if you’re a volleyball enthusiast, Pine Lake Prep has announced that their Senior Night festivities will be held on Thursday, complete with a varsity match scheduled for 5:30 p.m.!
So, as we prepare for Hurricane Helene, let’s stay flexible with our schedules and support our local teams. Keep an eye on the weather updates, and remember to stay safe, everyone. Go, teams, go!
