In a concerning turn of events, East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte is taking extra precautions today, operating under a modified lockdown due to threats made via social media. This move comes after the school community was shaken by multiple threats that surfaced online, prompting the school administration to take swift action to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) confirmed that the school would have an increased security presence on campus today, Wednesday, December 11. According to Principal Steve Drye, the school learned about the threats and began an internal investigation to determine their source. As a response, East Mecklenburg will have law enforcement representatives from both the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Police Department (CMSPD) on site as a precaution.
In a message directed to parents, Principal Drye emphasized the school’s commitment to student safety. He conveyed, “Out of an abundance of caution, our school will operate on a modified lockdown today.” During this lockdown, teaching and learning will proceed as scheduled, but student movement will be limited throughout the hallways to ensure that everyone remains safe and accounted for.
The threats have understandably left many parents feeling uneasy about sending their children to school today. The safety of their kids is of utmost importance, and parents are encouraged to stay informed and involved. As Principal Drye noted, “The safety and security of our students and staff remain our top priority.” He additionally stated that any student found to be responsible for the online threats would face disciplinary action based on the district’s Code of Conduct. This means severe consequences could be in store for anyone involved, with the possibility of legal ramifications as well.
In light of the situation, the school is urging all families to work together in creating a safer school environment. Parents are advised to have discussions with their children about the seriousness of making threats, even jokingly. To support this initiative, the school has encouraged students to report any concerning activity or threats they may encounter, whether online or on campus. “If you or your child are aware of any threats, you are encouraged to report the threats to authorities, tell a trusted adult or report it to the school,” the principal urged.
To facilitate communication and ensure the safety of all, the school community is reminded to utilize the “Say Something” app for anonymous reporting of any suspicious behavior. This tool provides a way for students to communicate concerns discreetly and effectively, allowing school and law enforcement to respond accordingly.
As East Mecklenburg High School deals with this pressing issue, the administration is grateful for the support and understanding from families and students. They are hopeful that through cooperation, awareness, and proactive reporting, they can navigate this challenge and maintain a secure learning environment for everyone involved.
As the day unfolds, updates on the situation are expected, and the school is committed to keeping the community informed. In times like these, it’s crucial for everyone to stay vigilant and supportive of one another, ensuring that students can focus on their education without fear. The safety and well-being of students and staff truly is a shared responsibility.
