Charlotte’s Holiday Theater Extravaganza: A Celebration You Can’t Miss!
The festive spirit is alive and well in Charlotte, North Carolina! As the holiday season approaches, the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is once again gracing the stage with two delightful productions that promise to entertain families and spread cheer. Mark your calendars for “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical”, which is running from November 22 to December 22. And don’t forget about the enchanting premiere of “Doggie on My Doorstep: A Holiday Tail”, showing from December 12 to December 22!
Return of a Beloved Classic
Returning for another year, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical” has become a cherished tradition in Charlotte. Directed and choreographed by Jennifer Poarch, this heartwarming tale revolves around the uproarious antics of the Herdman kids—the self-proclaimed “worst kids in the history of the world” as they commandeer a local church’s Christmas production. “It’s a wild ride filled with laughter and love,” Poarch promises.
She emphasizes the universal themes of the story, promoting empathy and equality, saying, “It’s 70 minutes of chaos, humor, and heartfelt moments that resonate with audiences of all ages.” With 14 newcomers in a cast of 27 this year, the excitement in the air is palpable. Poarch, who has been involved in the production since 2017, is more thrilled than ever to direct this delightful show because, for the first time, she will be watching it from the audience perspective. How magical!
A Magical New Experience for Little Ones
In addition to the beloved classic, the Children’s Theatre is introducing something new for younger audiences. “Doggie on My Doorstep: A Holiday Tail”, running from December 12 to December 22, is an enchanting experience crafted for preschoolers. Directed by Steven Levine and Caleb Sigmon, this play dives deep into the joy of friendship and those fleeting connections that stick with us long after they happen.
Levine describes the production as something special. “It’s playful and fun, designed for kids but with enough big laughs for the grown-ups too,” he shares. One of the stars of the show is a stunning dog puppet that’s bound to steal a few hearts. “It’s so realistic that kids will want to pet him after the show! It’s like the magical puppetry in ‘The Lion King’,” Sigmon adds, hinting at the dynamic visuals they have created.
Instead of traditional dialogue, the storytelling in this piece is akin to silent film or clown theater, allowing the audience to experience the story through visual humor and physicality. With both Levine and Sigmon’s wealth of experience in theater, you can bet this new production will captivate and delight!
Additional Holiday Fun Awaits
But wait, there’s more! Don’t miss out on stopping by The Winter Wonderland Shop from December 4-7 for a special holiday treat for the kids. It’s the perfect spot to find a little something for the young ones while soaking in that festive atmosphere.
The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is a beloved institution in the Queen City, providing professional theatre experiences for families since 1948. By reaching over 250,000 children and families a year, they are not just telling stories; they are also cultivating a new generation of creators and thinkers. Their initiative, The Kindness Project, aims to inspire young people to dream and view the world through a lens of kindness.
