Charlotte: Homicide suspect arrested after chase ends at police headquarters

Homicide Suspect Leads Police on Chase

Early Friday morning, a dramatic chase came to an end in Charlotte when a homicide suspect led police on a chase that culminated in the parking lot of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police headquarters. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Dean Antonio Tate, was wanted in connection to a deadly shooting on Scottview Drive in west Charlotte the previous night.

Police Respond to Suspicious Vehicle

The chain of events began when police received a 911 call reporting a suspicious vehicle in the area of South Boulevard and Arrowood Road. Officers began following a silver pickup truck and determined that the vehicle was linked to the homicide suspect they were seeking. When police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the suspect refused to pull over, initiating a pursuit.

Chase Ends at Police Headquarters

The chase unfolded as the suspect led officers up I-77 and onto the John Belk Freeway before making a surprising turn into the parking lot of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police headquarters, also known as the Law Enforcement Center (LEC). Police radio traffic captured the tense moments as officers worked to bring the situation under control.

Arrest and Charges

Following the chase, Dean Antonio Tate was taken into custody, and police recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the fatal shooting. Tate now faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and discharging a weapon into occupied property in connection to the incident on Scottview Drive. The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Robert Long Jr.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events that led up to the pursuit. The quick actions of law enforcement in apprehending the suspect undoubtedly prevented further harm and brought a dangerous situation to a swift resolution.
