Charlotte Community Rallies to Support Young Kindergartener in Need of Kidney Transplant

Charlotte Community Unites to Help a Young Kindergartener in Need

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A heartwarming story has emerged from Providence Day School, where a tight-knit community banded together to support one of their own. Five-year-old Carter Wilson found himself in desperate need of a kidney transplant, and thanks to the selflessness of a fellow parent, he has received a second chance at life.

As we caught up with Carter in his cheerful kindergarten classroom, he introduced himself with a sweet smile, saying, “My name is Carter, and I’m 5 years old.” With all the adorable charm of a typical kindergartener, it’s no surprise that many felt compelled to help this little guy.

A Community in Action

The call for help started when Carter’s family learned about his health struggles. Initially, the vibrant boy was just experiencing pneumonia in March 2023, but during a hospital visit, devastating news emerged—it turned out his kidneys were failing! His concerned father, Dewett Wilson, recalled the moment they received the shocking diagnosis: “Doctors said his creatine levels kept shooting up, and I was like ‘What does that mean?'” He described the urgent need for emergency surgery for dialysis, a turning point that would change their lives forever.

Sadly, Carter’s kidney function plummeted from a healthy 90% to just 10% in a matter of weeks. Faced with these dire circumstances, his mom, Sadna Wilson, took charge and immediately began searching for a kidney donor. Through her determination and creativity, she reached out to other parents at Providence Day School, asking for their help in spreading the word about Carter’s condition.

An Unexpected Hero

It was here that Caroline Dudley entered the picture. With her four children enrolled at Providence Day, she stumbled upon Carter’s story on social media. “I felt, if I was in a position to help, there’s no reason I shouldn’t,” Dudley remarked. As fate would have it, she was the same blood type as Carter and wasted no time in submitting a donor application after a quick Google search.

When it was confirmed that Caroline was a match, she willingly stepped up to donate her kidney. After both had their surgeries, this amazing woman visited Carter, making a heartfelt connection that both families cherish deeply. “I feel like I’ve gained a family, so I’ve gotten more out of this experience than I ever imagined,” she said with joy.

A Bond That Lasts Forever

The bond between these two families has only grown stronger since the surgeries. Sadna Wilson described Caroline as “an angel” and expressed profound gratitude for the kindness she showed during such a challenging time. Dewett Wilson added, “She’s a remarkable human being. She’s given our little boy a shot at life.” The connection between them is so special that Caroline’s picture can now be found among cherished memories in Carter’s school locker.

Both families have made it a point to raise awareness about the importance of kidney donations. They believe many lives could be saved by encouraging individuals to consider organ donation. Caroline, who was back on the tennis court shortly after her surgery, firmly believes that the rewards of helping others are immeasurable.
