The thefts occurred along the 5700 block of Old Dowd Road, not far from Josh Birmingham Parkway. On the evening of August 22, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol attempted to pull over Komthongpane for speeding and failing to wear a seatbelt. However, instead of stopping, he fled the scene, resulting in a dangerous pursuit. Tragically, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree at the intersection of Fred D. Alexander Boulevard and Freedom Drive.
