Charlotte, NC – April 2, 2024

A Charlotte man, Michael Crittenden, has been sentenced to prison after stealing a minivan with a child inside. The incident took place in 2019 when Crittenden attempted to steal a van with a child inside. The jury found Crittenden guilty of felony larceny but not guilty of kidnapping. Judge Osman sentenced Crittenden to eight–19 months in prison.

Original Story

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department detectives reported that Michael Crittenden, 26, was arrested in Conway, South Carolina, on Sunday night for unrelated charges. It was during his booking that Conway authorities discovered outstanding warrants in Charlotte related to a stolen vehicle and kidnapping case.

CMPD stated that Crittenden stole a Kia Sedona minivan that was left running and unattended outside the Novant Health complex on Hawthorne Lane. The van had a child inside when it was stolen. Crittenden later dropped the child off safely on Water Walk Lane before being apprehended. The stolen minivan was also recovered in Conway at the time of Crittenden’s arrest.

Michael Crittenden now faces charges of First-Degree Kidnapping, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, and Possession of a Motor Vehicle. He is currently awaiting extradition to Mecklenburg County.
